5 speed manual transmission issue

I just purchased a 1998 S10 2wd with a 5 speed manual transmission, overdrive (5th gear) pops out when not under load, although this issue is eliminated by simply resting my hand on the shifter when decelerating in 5th, I'd like to see what it'd take to correct this. The truck has 96k miles on it, shifts perfectly and engages without issue. However, in 5th gear, if I take the load off the transmission (coast) the transmission disengages and pops into neutral. Any input is appreciated. Thank you.

More than likely the shifter parts or worn out, rebuild it.

Sounds like a bad countershaft bearing. The trans will need removed and disassembled to fix it.

SOURCE: 1997 Chevy 1500 P/U 4x4 small V8. Transmission shifting issue.

you may be confusing the torque converter clutch engagement with o.d. this trans has a problem with the T.C.C. regulator valve wearing out the valve body bore. this will cause the converter clutch to engage only sometimes or not at all. this will set a P1870 code in the control module. when this code is stored in the controller, ( check engine light may or may not be on), it increases the pressure in the transmission causing the 1-2 shift to be harsh. ask a local tranny shop to scan the vehicle ( most will do this for free) if this is the problem they can either fix your valve body (sonnax parts) or replace it with an upgraded valve body. hope this helps

Manual transmission 03 eclipse gts do I have overdrive?

If you have the five speed manual, almost certainly the fifth gear is an overdrive gear. Overdrive means that the gear ratio is less than 1:1, and in most 5 speeds, the fourth gear is 1:1, the fifth gear being less, such as 0.85:1 for instance. So yes, you probably have overdrive, it's just not called that in a standard transmission.

My 94 gmc with a 5 speed transmission, looses power in 5th gear. It still works but hills and inclines become an issue.

Have it scanned for codes. On inclines it should drop out of overdrive. This could be an engine or transmission problem. Also check vacuum lines.

Manual Transmission 5 speed

check the drain plug magnet for metal bits. Mostly you can remove the rear extension housing with out removing the gear box and you will find a small gear on the cluster shaft ( bottom shaft) and a larger gear on the out put shaft ( tail shaft) . Check that the shifter fork is actually moving the larger gear or gear dog into 5th gear (Fork loose on selector rail) or check that there are still teeth on the smaller gear as excessive high speed under load will rear out the teeth

I have a 1991 Ford f150 with the 4.9 engine and 5-speed manual transmission. But the 5th gear only says overdrive. Can i drive in 4th gear at highway speeds without shifting to 5th?

Sure you can, It just makes the engine work a little harder. As long as your not running down the road at 3000 rpm's all the time, it will be fine

Just bought the car cheap and the gear stick is 5 speed and selects 5th gear but when driving and in 5th gear its like in netual and the gear selectors bushing is worn bodjed sum tape on it and still...

On these WC Volkswagens, you have to make sure that the little ball-and-socket gear linkages are connected. If one is off, replace it with new, because the old one will probably pop off again. If there is no problem there and you can select 5th gear, and then only later does it "pop out" of gear, then the spline lock rings have worn where the mating surfaces of each spline tip don't provide a positive "lock" when under power. Some folks think that when a transmission "pops out" when driving, it is the syncronizers. This is never true. (Even Click and Clack get this one wrong continuously.) The syncronizers are responsible for clashing gears during the gear selecting action.
A transmission rebuild is in order if the thing pops out of gear. Good luck.
