that's a doosie. does the car run well when it is running? does it accelerate ok? does the battery die in the morning? turn the lights on when you start the car (or try to), if they dim that means your battery is not as charged as it should be. try taking your battery to get tested for free at autozone/kragen/pep boys. If it is the battery, that's easy, if the battery is good, something is draining it, maybe a bad ground, or car stereo amp that is on, or other light. anything interesting about the car's wiring?
thanks for the clarification

check the timing marks, make sure it didnt jump time a bit, if losing water but no signs of it underneath then you may have water in the head leaking through the head gasket into the oil, exhaust which would make it hard to start as there would be water in the cylinder from sitting all night...maybe more than one cylinder...
Probes/Mazdas have issues with their distributor you might pull a wire and check for spark. There was one time i even had spark and still had to change the distributor, you might be able to find a local used solution instead of new just make sure they have some kind of warranty.
Is it just ONE knocking noise, or is it multiple? If its one, you have a bad Cylinder Head. You need to change it quickly before it destroys your engine. Its a part that is simple to change. When you take the part out, you need to make sure that there aint no parts inside of the engine.
The fuel pump is very small and located in the fuel tank, these pumps are cooled by the gas around them, if you run out of gas it will overheat and many times fail, this is common.
when you run out of gas it really overheats the fuel pump, it is very small and compact, and it needs the gas around it to cool the heat of operation, I will bet you have burned it out, check the fuel pressure while cranking.
sounds like your immobilizer is giving you trouble i don't think you'd need to reprogram for a distributor if it worked for a week, your only option is bring to dealer to have immobilizer checked out please rate -jeff
