I had the same problem with my 02 Sequoia. To get the tailgate open and replace the broken handle you will have to remove the tailgate's panel cover.

The panel is affixed to the tailgate with about six to eight plastic stays on the back side of the panel.

You will need a "L"-shaped tool (The tool looks like a screw driver with its tip bent one-to-two inches.) that can be inserted under the panel's edge. Start @ the right, or left bottom corner.

After you pull the panel's second plastic stay away from the tailgate you will be able to use your hand to pull the rest of the stays away from the tailgate then push up on the panel to remove it.

After the panel is removed you will be able to see where the cable feeds into the broken handle. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to pull the cable and open the tailgate. Toyota charges $100.00 for a new handle.

chk the book that came with the suv. otherwise; do not break off the key trin to open it! squirt the cylinder frum the outside and then tri the key. tri release with the key fob. then tri to pull trim frum inside? not easy. lol.

Back door handle broke.how do i get the cover off to fix it to open it again?
use a long screwdriver, approx 8in and skinny. Under the handle you will see the broken part on the right side. remove that part and insert screwdriver striaght up as possible, then point down to push lever inside door. REMEMBER to unlock doors first, after inside panels removed and license plate, you can remove the license plate box and replace handle

This is a very common problem with the Sequoias (along with broken inside door openers).

Go to www.tundrasolutions.com and find the Sequoia section. There are numerous threads about the steps needed to replace this handle. Some go into great detail about the steps needed and offer fixes to keep it from happening again.

This design obviously has flaws, and Toyota should have acted to fix these flaws much sooner.

My 2004 Toyota Sequoia rear door will not open - the handle is broken. How do I get into the door, whith it closed, to make the necessary repairs?
Dig out the broken bits of door handle, then on the right side insert a flat head screwdriver diagonally up and fish around for the release lever.
Push up on the screwdriver handle to manipulate the release lever down and your tailgate will open.
Remove the interior panels by unbolting the 10mm bolt behind the strap and pulling off the interior pieces held on by plastic pop fasteners.
Remove the 10mm bolts around the perimeter of the interior cover plate and let it hang by the harness.
Remove the license plate.
Remove the license plate trim panel (multiple push fasteners from behind and a few 10mm around the lock)
Replace the handle.

The liftgate handle broke
It is possible to open from the outside. Remove the plastic piece that broke off from the outside of the tailgate. Use a penlight and you will see the mechanism. Get a small screwdriver and place into the hold...You can feel it spring when you have it in the right place...Push down on the screwdriver to make the mechanism pull the release cable. Make sure the vehicle is unlocked..It should work...My mechanic can open it in 10 secs with this method.

2003 Toyota Sequoia Tailgate Latch - how to replace
Remove your tag bolts and remove the cover by pulling easy as not to break the tabs. The tag lights can but do not have to come out. At this point you can access the handle. You will find that the handle has a plastic arm that trips the latch by pulling a cable it will be broken. To open the door just pull on the cable. Once I open the door I removed the inside door panel and a metal cover which has about 8 10mm bolts it gives you more room to work.

Can't open tailgate....The handle had broken and I replaced it. After that it worked good for about a day...then it stopped working again. I have the panel off and it appears that the cable may have...
I have the same problem, I pull on the cable, the metal piece moves on the lock acuator but tailgate does not open. Seems like the ACUATOR is stuck in LOCK position and pulling on the cable does not help. Any way to manually force the ACUATOR to open? I can replace the ACUATOR if I can lift the tailgate up but I can't.
