On honda civic lxi 1997:
idling generally ok upon initial starting. once engine is turned off for about 10 minutes and car is re-started, what happens is either the rpm drops during ignition (sometimes to the point of engine stall), or rpm goes very high (up to 2000) and stays there even when already in gear and running. recently done: replaced air filter, cleaned throttle body, tune-up and oil-change.
other things we might have missed? some adjustments? timing? any electronics involved?

Clutch plate and pressure plate seem to be too weak to pull the car. To test the clutch plate, park the car on flat surface. Pull the hand brake up, start the car, depress the foot brake pedal, depress the clutch pedal, put the car in 1st gear, press the gas pedal and leave the clutch pedal at once, while keeping the brake pedal depressed.
Follow one of the two following statements:
1. Engine does not shut down and remain start. (Clutch plate, pressure plate and clutch bearing defective - Replace all as a set)
2. Engine shuts down. (Clutch system is OK and does not require any repair).
It sounds like the thrust bearing has collapsed causing the noisy clutch. This means a gearbox removal and clutch overhaul. The rest is a case of a service and a tune up. but the important thing is the clutch.
The check engine light comes on mostly when you have bad gas tank cup,or you don't tight enough the gasoline.Go to any auto-zone and request the obd scanner,at no charge just leave your driver license or credit card, connect the scanner follow the instructions. They will check up and the check engine light will come off in the next 3 to 5 days. Thank you !!
the thermostat is located inside the heater/cooling assembly under the dash. Remove all the screws and the black cover, once removed the thermostat will be exsposed. hope this helps. You may just have to buy a $20 manual from autozone or somewhere. Its so hard to explain some things with just words.
To my knowledge (at least in my country), some Honda Civics have a compensator solenoid the pushes on the throttle that adjust the engine's RPM to its standard idling when the A/C compressor is activated. Technically, this solenoid is nothing more but a coil and a plunger. When the compressor runs, the same relay activates this solenoid and pushes the plunger forward increasing the RPM. Pls check/clean/adjust/replace as deemed fit and necessary.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
