I have a clunking sound in the rear differincail
If you hear it going around corners, it "might" be normal. It depends on a number of factors. Do you know if it is a limited slip differential? If so, they tend to make a little more noise than conventional differentials. Is the fluid level low? Generally speaking it should be level with the bottom of the fill hole. Also check to make sure the vent is not blocked up. If you have a locking differential, the noise will usually be a bit a ratchety as the one clutch grabs and releases. If there are no leaks at the wheel seals, it should not be a major concern. If however it is a knock sound consistent with tire rotation, you want to check it out as a spider gear shaft "might" be working loose, and if it does, you are going to have bad day as you find out how quickly you stop with a locked up rear end.If the noise appears when shifting from reverse to forward, or vice versa, it may simply be increased gear lash between ring gear and pinion, they can be very fogiving, I have heard some vehicles where the driveshaft would ring like a bell when shifting direction from backwards to forwards. It just becomes evident as the gears "wear in" to each other and is normal. As long as it runs quietly on the highway, and you can live with it making some noise when shifting from forwaed to reverse and forward again, it normally is not a great concern. If a whine from the gears develops, they are approaching a point of going out of mesh and should be checked and adjusted.
