How do you adjust the steering wheel free play on

How do you adjust the steering wheel free play on a 1990 Toyota Pickup
(22R, 2w drive, carbureted)?

FREE PLAY IN THE STEERING IS CAUSED BY WEAR OF THE STEERING COMPONENTS AND SHOULD NEVER REQUIRE ADJUSTMENT THAT SAID THIS SYSTEM USES EITHER A RACK AND PINION TYPE OF STEERING OR A STEERING BOX, IF YOU HAVE A STEERING BOX THEN YOU CAN MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENT TO ITS FREE PLAY, WITH THE WHEELS OFF THE GROUND LOOSEN THE LOCK NUT ON THE TOP OF THE BOX THAT LOCKS DOWN A LARGE SCREW, AFTER THE LOCK NUT HAS BEEN RELEASED TURN THE SCREW INWARD UNTIL YOU FELL MOST OF THE PLAY IS GONE, DON'T TIGHTEN IT TO THE POINT THE WHEEL DRAGS WHEN U TURN IT FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, THEN LOCK IT DOWN WITH THE LARGE LOCK NUT. IF YOU HAVE PLAY YOU HAVE VERY WORN STEERING COMPONENTS, MY ADVICE TO YOU IS THIS, HAVE A LOCAL TIRE OR FRONT END SHOP INSPECT THE FRONT END OF THE TRUCK FOR WORN OUT COMPONENTS, THEY DO THIS FOR FREE, MOST LIKELY YOU WILL NEED AT LEAST NEW TIE ROD ENDS AND VERY LIKELY A NEW OR REBUILT STEERING BOX OR RACK WHICHEVER U HAVE. BELOW IS A PICTURE OF A STEERING BOX WHICH IS ADJUSTABLE FOR FREE PLAY.

HEAT PROBLEM ON 3Y TOYOTA ENGINE

I RECENTLY BOUGHT A MICROBUS WITH A TOYOTA 3Y ENGINE CONVERSION -IT HAS A HEATING PROBLEM -TEMPERATURE SENDER SWITCH HAS BEEN REPLACED BUT DOES NOT GIVE A READING-NOW WATER LEAKS FROM OVER FLOW PIPE NEAR FILLER CAP AND I HAVE BLOCKED IT OFF-THE EXPANSION BOTTLE JUST BUBBLES OVER WITH HOT WATER

There is a separate T-piece 3way thermostat made by BMW for the old box shaped 318i and 518i cars. It is a separate unit that fits into the water pipes, and not onto the engine. It has a hot water inlet, and a hot water to radiator outlet, and an engine warming outlet. Each outlet has a thermostat. The radiator on opens when the water is hot, and the engine warming closes when the water gets too hot. The temp stays at 85 D Celsius all the time. Works well on my vw synchco bus and subaru 2.5 engine.

Vacuum switch on power steering pump?!?!? What does it do??

I had to replace my power steering pump and noticed for some reason I have a vacuum switch on it with two vacuum hoses. One of the nipples was broken preventing a hose from being attached, so I priced a new one at the Toyota dealership. They had no idea what the switch was supposed to do for the pump, and had no way to order it!! They found one like it for $200!! I told them never-mind and blocked off the hoses, but I would like to know what the switch is supposed to do. I have asked many mechanics, many part stores, and even the Toyota mechanics and they all say "Why do you have a vacuum switch on your power steering pump?!?!" Hell if I knew that I wouldn't be asking them!! Can anybody help me? Thanks!!

Your mechanics are either stupid or are playing stupid. Its to raise the idle speed when there is high power steering pressure. Like when you turn the steering wheel, the pressure goes up, and it raises the engine idle speed. Find one in a junkyard, They have U-Pull IT yards around here, you can get one cheap.

ADJUSTMENT

22R and 22R-E
See Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6

  1. Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
  2. Turn the engine OFF . Remove the air cleaner and housing, along with the hot air and cold air intake ducts.

CAUTION Components will be hot. The engine head, block and radiator will be very hot.

  1. Remove any other hoses, cables, or wires attached to the valve cover. The valve cover (or cylinder head cover) is the domed steel item with the oil filler in it.
  2. Remove the small nuts holding the valve cover, then lift the cover off. Retrieve the rubber gasket and put it aside; it can be reused if not damaged or crushed out of shape. Beware of hot oil dripping from the inside of the cover.
  3. Use a large wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt to turn the engine clockwise until the timing mark on the pulley to 0 on the scale. Turning the engine will be easier if the spark plugs are removed, but this is not required.

CAUTION Do not attempt to align the engine by using the ignition switch to turn the engine. Doing will splash hot oil onto everything in the area, including you.

  1. Check that the rockers on No.1 cylinder are loose and the rockers on No.4 are under tension. (No.1 is closest to the radiator; No. 4 is closest to the firewall.) If this is true, the engine is aligned with No.1 piston at top dead center. If it is not true, turn the engine one full revolution clockwise and realign the timing mark at zero; recheck the rockers.
  2. Adjust the clearance 0.008 in. (0.20mm) intake and 0.012 in. (0.30mm) exhaust. Insert a feeler gauge and check for proper clearance between the top of the valve stem and the bottom of the rocker arm on the No. 1 intake valve. To adjust, loosen the locknut on the end of the rocker arm and turn the adjusting screw until the clearance is correct. Tighten the locknut and recheck the clearance; there should be a slight drag felt when the feeler gauge is pulled through the gap. Repeat the procedure for No 1 exhaust, No 2 intake and No. 3 exhaust.

  1. Turn the crankshaft pulley one full rotation clockwise until the marks align at 0 and for the remaining valves.

Fig. Fig. 6: Adjust the second set of valves the same as the first

  1. Clean the valve cover thoroughly with a lint-free rag. Wipe any oil off the cylinder head edges in the area of the valve cover gasket.
  2. Fit the gasket into the valve cover, making sure it is not crimped or twisted. If the half-moon rubber plugs came out of the valve cover, clean them and apply sealant to the part of the plug contacting the valve cover; install the half-moon plug.

The use of sealants on the valve cover gasket is not recommended.
  1. Install the valve cover onto the head. Make certain is squarely seated and not pinching any adjacent wires or cables.
  2. Install the valve cover retaining nuts. Tighten them to 43-60 inch lbs. (5-7 Nm) This is little more than finger-tight; overtightening will deform the cover and cause leaks.
  3. Connect the lines, hoses and cables which were removed for access. Make certain electrical and ignition wires are firmly held by their clips or brackets.
  4. Install the air cleaner with the hoses and duct work.
  5. If still in place, remove the wrench and socket from the crankshaft pulley.

The Feol pump/circuit opening relay is located inside the cab on a relay block either behind the glove bosx or the right kick panel, I'll see if I can locate a location diagram and post it in a follow up. In the meantime locate the diagnostic check connector under the hood,it's located near the right fender on a fuse block, open the cover and put a jumper wire between the terminals FP and B+, turn the key on and let me know if this makes the fuel pump run.
