1996 Land Rover Range Rover - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
My 1996 Range Rover A 4.6 ltr motor has developed
bearings don't rattle --they knock and the knock gets louder with rpm
it has a chain drive for the cam shaft and rattles are associated with a worn chain as there is no slack adjuster
The v8 engine (originally a 4 litre ) was only stroke by 10 mm to give it extra power
there was never any problem with the block from cracking as that engine was used in the Leyland truck and p38 car as well as range rover cars and off road vehicles
it's big draw card was the power to weight ratio being an aluminium cast block it was suited to fast car applications
Need to replace lh door handle
To do this you need to remove the door card or you do on most other car doors , some car door cards can be tricky if you don't take out all the screws and where the hidden ones are so what to do is ie workshop manual , or what I call the cars bible for any problems go on youtube on how to fit your handle if that fails go to your local kwik fit on a weekend and ask one of the lads if thay want a little private job , my mate does it all the time on weekend to earn extra cash good luck and would like to know how you got on please colin
4.0 V8 range rover 96 where does the fuel pipes connect to the engine?
Undo the junction before the injectors and turn on the ignition to see if fuel is pumping. Most likely it is not but I doubt there is a broken pipe - more likely a broken power wire
The pump is in the top of the tank. Remove the carpet and cover plate to get to it. Turn on the ignition and use a multimeter to check if there is power to the connectors. The sensor wire will only show about 5 volts but the power wire should show 12 volts or more.
If no power, trace the wire under the vehicle to find the break and re-join it - preferably with solder and shrink but spade terminals and shrink will do. Alternatively run a new wire from the pump to a switched wire under the dash but this is a lot more work
Bonnet open
there is a switch that is located somwhere on your bonnet, this switch is faulty, loose, or out of adjustment. might look like this-
Range rover problems
Sound like the switch pack but could also be a computer fault. Not something you can fix yourself. Find a specialist shop - not a dealer to check it out
Won't start willnot turnover
I assume you have checked the battery? If less than 12.4 volts that is probably the cause of the problem. If it is OK, get under the vehicle and thump the starter solenoid (the cylinder attached to the starter itself) with a hammer to loosen any internal rust. Also check the earth connections - finally jump the connections on the solenoid with a BIG screwdriver - but keep your hand well clear of the metal parts unless you want a nasty shock. If all this fails, you probably need a new starter motor
Range rover p38 problems
I have the same problem sometimes
1 Check the condition of your battery, if old, it will not give full power required to communicate with the security system.
2 If you don't have the EKA of your RR, try this next time you get caught, put key in the drivers door look, press unlock button on key fob and at the same time turn to unlock, if all locks unlock then the engine should not be immobilized - Good luck
Elaine I Have Kids To Feed,I Cant Get Back And Forth To Work,PLEASE,PLEASE Someone Help Me?I Had The Brake Switch Replaced,Did Not Work,Still Reads Fuse 17 Failed,No Brake Lights Or Heater,And Cannot
You need the help of a local repair shop
Take it to a different one & leave it there,
until ALL issues are resolved
Would appear your too trusting & never had the shop
prove anything was resolved, before paying & leaving
with the vehicle
You have to start taking control of the situations, when
dealing with any merchant
No one can guess at vehicle problems
without a car to check out & test
How to reset engine disability in 1996 Range Rover?
Lock doors with the key. Take out key . Insert key open and close lock 5 times then on the fifth turn open door this will reset the disable code to normal . I had this code on my P38 Range Rover and the Rover Tech assisted me with this simple way to reset the engine disable fault code . Good Luck .
Battery not holding charge
Hi first check the alternator belt (is it loose...is it there?) if all is ok there then it could be the alternator, have a multimetre put on it it should read around 13.5 if the alternator is doing its job,
Hope this helps

How to reset ECU and eingen system
I'm not aware of any reset that can be done without the Rover TextBook. If you simply want to clear the stored data, trouble codes, etc thats pretty simple. -engine off, remove negative lead from the battery (single black cable). I usually wrap this with a rubber glove or a rubber drawer toolbox liner, something rubber any way just to be on the safe side and then tuck somewhere out of the way so it doesn't springback and make unwanted contact with anything. Once your negative lead is removed many stored items will be cleared from memory. Let Rover sit with cable off for an hour or so. This will also discharge the stored power within the BECM and the ECM (Rovers brain). At this point everything that can be cleared in your garage has been cleared. There are a couple systems that I believe are not affected such as ABS and the EAS system. If you are having airshock issues this will not reset the EAS faults. Hope this helps.
Can't open trunk
Its your actuator. A sudden and complete failure is common. Remove the panel from the inside of the tailgate to reveal the rods connected to each side of the gate. Pinch them toward rack other with pair of needlenose pliers and push the gate down. Easy access to thelock/ latch components makes for an easy fix and it me be just the push button. Not an expensive item either. This is one opportunity to experience the thrill of victory without frustration. Hope this helps. If I can answer any further or specifically please repost and ill do my best. Good luck.
