1997 Ford Expedition - Page 5 Questions & Answers
While driving my 97 ford expedition, it makes a low rumbling sound, similar to the sound of driving on a shoulder. When I let off the gas or give it more gas, it usually stops for a few seconds, then
sounds like you have a wheel bearing that's bad, some vehicles have the wheel sensor mounted right to the wheel bearing.
best way to check is drive down a straight road at a steady speed, then turn the wheel left, like your going to change lanes, then do the same but this time turn the wheel to the right.
Now if the noise is louder when you turn left, then that tells you the right wheel bearing is bad, if you turn right and the noise is greater, then your left wheel bearing is bad.
the reason for this, is when you shift the vehicle left or right, the weight of the body shifts the opposite way that you are turning, thus putting more weight on the bearing, causing it to get louder.
Hope this helps.

How do I change the blend door actuator on a 1997 Ford Expedition
This is a big job. You have to drop steering colum, dash, etc. about 6-8 hour job just to get to the heater core where the blend door is located. Go to youtube and look for video on "heater core replacement ". The video is great. they show you all the hidden bolts and screws. The door is on the front side of heater core. It costs about 15-20 bucks at oreillys auto parts. A tough job for a cheap part. Good luck. I did mine in 2 days. First day disassemble and 2nd day assemble. Take your time. The dealer will charge you 800-1200 dollars for the job.
