If there was just a long delay, I would check the transmisssion fluid level and condition first. Since you did not specify your mileage, I am assuminhg you have higher mileage since it is a 2000 my. The transmission in your car was possibly subject to programming updates that addressed internal pressure lost when first putting in reverse.
