BMW E46 fault code P2799 - what does it mean

Automatic 02 BMW compact - The car is 'ticking over' high and the transmission light is coming on. Also when breaking it seems to select the wrong gear - there was a code P2799 when checked. Not sure if any other fault codes are now present.

If is for a 3 series compact (318ti most common) then
P2799 is the intake air tem sensor 2
Which would explain the high idleing. Probably a sensor problem (bmw will charge) a competant mechanic should do it easily.

hey solo, 06-07 door lock actuators can blow a fuse in the glove box. bmw does have a specific bulletin that addresses this issue and requires replacing the fuse if blown and measure the resistance of all the door lock actuators to determine which is bad. the doors should be able to be opened with the key mechanically. if not for some reason, you should be able to comfort open the windows and will have to crawl inside the car. the fuse panel is inside the glove box and not fun to get to. I believe the fuse is a 10 or 15 amp fuse maybe 5th from the bottem right.

Fusible links are often identified by the color coding of the insulation. Refer to the accompanying illustration for wire link size and color.

Fig. Common fusible link color coding

Circuit Breakers - Resetting & Replacement
Circuit breakers are located inside the fuse panel. They are automatically reset when the problem corrects itself, is repaired, or the circuit cools down to allow operation again.

Fuses Replacement
Use the provided plastic fuse puller located in the fuse panel to remove fuses. The upper lid of the fuse panel has a diagram of the fuse locations and amperage ratings for each circuit. The fuse is removed by simply pulling upward on the fuse with the removal tool.

The fuses are easily checked by visual inspection. With the ignition switch OFF pull the fuse out of the holder. Check the fuse filament. It should be continuous and not broken. If the filament is broken, replace the fuse with one of the same amperage rating.

The fuse and relay box on the E30 and E36 models is located in the engine compartment. The E36 models also has relay boxes located under the left side of the dashboard.

The diagram is in section 610 of the Bentley Manual. Some have downloaded it through a link provided here: http://www.bimmerwerkz.com/forum/3-s...4-a-50762.html

Good luck.

P0313 - Misfire Detected with Low Fuel
P0174 -System too Lean (Bank 2).
P0171 -System too Lean (Bank 1).

P0171 and P0174 mean "system too lean" for banks 1& 2, respectively. This means that 2 O2 sensors are reporting too lean. Since it is unlikely that 2 sensors would go bad at the same time, it is more likely an intake problem. The P0300 code indicates multiple cylinder misfires and doesn't necessarily relate to O2 sensors.

With your engine running, try to slowly and slightly remove your oil cap. There should be a slight vac, but if it's a very strong vac. and the engine stumbles hard when you remove it then it probably needs a "Crank case vent valve." Other places to look for air leaks is the air boot that "Ys" off at the throttle body and Idle control valve (follow your MAF back to your Intake and you will see it). The small hose on the boot that goes to the Idle control valve cracks on some older cars and allows "false air" in, causing your lean mixture faults.

If none of these give you anything, look at your MAF signal as the engine is running (operating temperature WITH THE A/C OFF). IF the MAF reads something other than 11-13 kg (I think it's KG) then you probably have a faulty MAF.

An easy way to find an air leak is with a can of carb cleaner, or break cleaner run the engine, then go around spraying stuff, and listen for the idle to rise up. spray on the intake boot, and around the hoses and such going to the intake.
