2006 Volvo S40 T5 - Page 8 - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
Our car will not start...
Pretty common issue with the newer Volvo's seems that they used an inferior parts set for the electronic steering wheel lock and when it fails the key warning comes on. The fix is to replace the steering column and/or the lock barrel. Both parts come to around $250 total. Often this problem is either under recall and/or warranty.
I'd call the dealer to see if you can get the recall or warranty replacement.
if you are to do it yourself post another question and I'll walk you through it.
Hope this helps.

Check the wiring going to the transmission. Look for a pinched wire from the car being put on a rack or possibly an accident you may have had recently. If you can find no problems with the wiring or connections then it is time to see a professional transmission expert. It may just be that the transmission has an internal problem.

1997 Volvo S40 1,9 Diesel Turbo - Engine code: D4192T
Volvo type trouble code identification: EFI-411
Fault location: Throttle Position (TP) sensor
Probable cause: Wiring, TP sensor.
First step is to check the TP sensor wiring & connecting plug. Repair as necessary, and erase the Engine Control Module (ECM) memory from errors & reset the ECM.
If the TP sensor wiring & connections are in good condition and the problem still occurs, and the Engine Control Module (ECM) memory can not be erased by faults, then replace the Throttle Position (TP) sensor. Then erase the Engine Control Module (ECM) memory from errors & reset the ECM. The engine management light will turn OFF, and everything will be fine.
I have a 97 s40
Error code 122 is 122 Solenoid S1 open circuit.-------- The 122 code is for the S1 Solenoid, open circuit. The transmission gear solenoids needs to be inspected. ---------
And the other code is 411 is 411 TP sensor signal. For this error the throttle position sensor located on throttle body needs to be inspected. It can be sensor itself that is got faulty or the sensor wiring.----------
---------
This is not very costly repair. But it depends upon what part is getting replaced.Basically for both throttle position sensor and solenoid, the part cost is approx $250.But extra charge for repairing and labor for the tech. Also if any other fault detected , then cost may increase.----------
Getting it checked and replaced is advisable.----------

Lost the only key to
Did the old key have a fairly large handle to it, like one with a radio or infra-red unlocking button?
If so its probably got a built in immobiliser circuit which needs to be programmed to your car. You'll have to go back to the dealer or check out your user manual to make sure.
The dealer should be able to re-program it for you but if you can get a price then shop around.

Are you saying that the sprocket will fit the camshaft in more than one way? Whoops...
Hello! Cigarette lighter does not
its probably a blown fuse or the heating element on thr lighter went bad. you can go to any auto parts store and buy a new element. check for power, probe center of socket with a voltage tester, and ground the other end to the lighter caseing. if power the light on tester will light up. if power, element is toast.
Where is the massive air
Air flow sensor is located on the air intake between the air filter and the engine you should be able to see the wires attaching to the plastic inlet near air filter. Sounds like air filter might need replacing.

Hi, the buttons control the shift point of the transmission. W is for winter, S is for sport. S will give you higher RPM shift points. You can access your owners manual online here:

It discusses the controls on page 63:

This could be a bad sensor but to find out you will need to have the abs computer scanned for codes, a scan tool is needed to get the codes, the computer will tell you what part of the system has failed and with so testing you will be able to find the problem. for example there may be a code that reads B123 left front speed sensor erratic signal, you would then check the sensor and make sure connections are good and that the sensor head is clean but scanning is the first step. good day.

The timing marks diagram for a 2002 Volvo 1.9 D Turbo:
Installation:
1. Ensure timing pin inserted [5].
2. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing marks aligned [3].
3. Fit timing belt in following order:
3.1. Crankshaft sprocket.
3.2. Tensioner pulley.
3.3 Camshaft sprocket.
3.4. Water pump pulley.
NOTE: Observe direction of rotation marks on belt.
4. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets.
5. Ensure marks on belt aligned with marks on sprockets [9] & [10].
6. Turn camshaft sprocket slightly in clockwise direction to tension timing belt against tensioner pulley.
7. Fit timing belt to fuel pump sprocket.
8. Turn camshaft sprocket slightly in anti-clockwise direction to tension timing belt against water pump pulley.
9. Install:
9.1. Crankshft pulley [7].
9.2. Crankshaft pulley centre bolt [6]. Use new bolt.
10. Ensure timing pin located correctly [5].
11. Tighten crankshaft pulley centre bolt [6]. Tightening torque = 20 Nm + 100 ... 130 degrees.
12. Remove timing pin [5].
13. Slacken tensioner nut [8].
14. Insert M6 bolt [11].
15. Attach tension gauge to belt at triangle sign (see above pictures). Tool: Volvo No. 951 2797 [12].
16. Screw in M6 bolt until tension gauge indicates 88 +/- 3 Hz.
17. Remove tension gauge [12].
18. Temporaly tighten tensioner pulley bolt [8].
19. Turn crankshaft 4 turns clockwise to TDC on No.1 cylinder.
20. Insert 8 mm timing pin [5].
21. Rock crankshaft slightly to ensure timing pin located correctly.
22. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing marks aligned [3].
23. Remove timing pin [5].
24. Attach tension gauge to belt at triangle sign (see above pictures). Tool: Volvo No. 951 2797 [12].
25. Tension gauge should indicates 85 +/- 3 Hz.
26. If not: Screw in M6 bolt until tension gauge indicates 85 +/- 3 Hz.
27. Remove tension gauge [12].
28. Tighten tensioner nut to 50 Nm [8].
NOTE: DO NOT turn crankshaft again to check timing belt tension.
29. Remove M6 bolt [11].
30. Fit blanking plug and tighten to 20 Nm [4]. Use locking fluid.
31. Install components in reverse order of removal.
32. Check Engine Control Module (ECM) fault memory.
How to open trunk after
If you are able to get INTO the trunk you can open the latch with just a screwdriver. It is normally just like the latches for your car doors. BUT if the latch is damaged it might not work with the inside rautomatic release button.
