Check for a clogged radiator. Also check for proper fan operation. Do not mess with the cap. That has nothing to do with overheating.

A 1998 is a first generation Durango. As long as it is a standard model anything up to 2003 should fit. **NOTE** The second generation model was brought in for 2003/2004 so make sure any parts are Not for the newer Second generation model. Something to think about. You should never let a gas tank run out or low as this is where any dirt settles at the bottom of the tank. I have seen a problem like yours and the fuel filter was plugged because of dirt in the bottom of the tank. Should never let a tank get lower than a quarter of a tank.
