Your single button sets the number of hours the power stays on. So, if it gets dark at 5:00 pm, and you want the lights to go off at 11:00 pm, you press the button 6 times until you see '6' in the display. That's it. it will turn on at 5:00 and turn off 6 hours later at 11:00 pm. You CAN'T set it to come on at 4:00. It will only come on when it gets to a certain light intensity at dusk. For that, you need the two button version, which has Mode and Hours. . Here is the manual. If you look carefully, the instructions are usually embossed into the back of the timer. Now if you live in say Alaska where the night can be longer than 8 hours this won't be as useful. Most areas have the darkest night 2300 or 11pm to 6 am ( seasonally adjusted) you decide how long you want the light on.
