Could be a bad lid switch. As you lift the lid up and down can you hear the lid switch click on and off?
If you can hear it click chances are it's good. If you can't hear it click on and off that's your problem.
Thanks for the idea. We thought of that didn't think our machine had one since normally I can open the lid and the agitator keeps going. It does stop spinning action when the lid is opened however. So could we have a lid switch that is only activated during the spin cycle?
Thanks. Good suggestion. We thought that because normally we can open the machine during the agitation cycle and it keeps going that it didn't have a lid switch. But it does normally stop spinning when the lid is opened, so I guess it does have some sort of a switch. But it "died" during the agitation cycle, so would this be a lid switch problem?
Some model stop agitating too with the lid up, but yours does not sound like one of them models. In that case I would suspect a bad timer or bad connection on the timer or motor plug.
You may have tried this already, but pull the timer knob out and wiggle it around to see if it will kick in and start running.

Okay. The lid switch does click but we'll get a little more agressive with the timer knob; however, you're probably right that it's something else. It is an older washer but has been a good one so I hate to give up on it. Guess it's time to call in a repairman :>(
