If the display works fine when connected to external screen via VGA connector then then the problem is either with the LCD display panel ( which consists of the display panel and inverter ) or the LCD cable that connects the LCD to the motherboard. You could try to re-seat the cable connection on the back of the LCD panel.
My bad! There is an inverter board that is located directly beneath the display panel which is a separate board. So now you ave 3 possible culprits:
1. The display panel
2. The inverter board.
3. the I/O cable that connects the display to motherboard.
Cheers - had somthing dropped on it when closed - whats more likely iverter or screen?
Any way to check the cable can it be buzzed?
Any diagnostic checks i can do to narrow it down before doing 'Ford problem solving' & changing everything but the chassis & wheels? Thanks 4 ur help.
You can try running the LCD BIST test, however if your display is white you will not be able to view results. You can try running this test while connected to an external monitor to see if it reports any errors.
Initiate the LCD BIST by holding down the
The LCD BIST remains active for 20 seconds (the same length of time the PSA displays the LCD BIST), even if there are power-up failures.
This model is not that old. Don't you have a warranty?
Thanks will try this when back from work. Naw no warantty - Dells uk waranty has so many get our clauses its a cash diode in but not out!
Test Result - everything worked on a screen attached to the video connection on the side of the laptop nothing was seen on the lap top screen it remained white. On battery test it says remove the charger when i did this the laptop screen reacted & went 'Tartan' with a very slow raster down the screen. Then the function CRT/VGA woudl not react till i went into hibernate & came back out? Strange does that give any ideas?
No, it appears your LCD display panel or cable from panel to motherboard is defective.
