If the display works fine when connected to external screen via VGA connector then then the problem is either with the LCD display panel ( which consists of the display panel and inverter ) or the LCD cable that connects the LCD to the motherboard. You could try to re-seat the cable connection on the back of the LCD panel.

My bad! There is an inverter board that is located directly beneath the display panel which is a separate board. So now you ave 3 possible culprits:
    1. The display panel
    2. The inverter board.
    3. the I/O cable that connects the display to motherboard.

You can try running the LCD BIST test, however if your display is white you will not be able to view results. You can try running this test while connected to an external monitor to see if it reports any errors.
Initiate the LCD BIST by holding down the key while pressing the power button. This keystroke causes the system to turn on and immediately begin running the BIST.
The LCD BIST remains active for 20 seconds (the same length of time the PSA displays the LCD BIST), even if there are power-up failures.
This model is not that old. Don't you have a warranty?

Thanks will try this when back from work. Naw no warantty - Dells uk waranty has so many get our clauses its a cash diode in but not out!
Test Result - everything worked on a screen attached to the video connection on the side of the laptop nothing was seen on the lap top screen it remained white. On battery test it says remove the charger when i did this the laptop screen reacted & went 'Tartan' with a very slow raster down the screen. Then the function CRT/VGA woudl not react till i went into hibernate & came back out? Strange does that give any ideas?

No, it appears your LCD display panel or cable from panel to motherboard is defective.

Screen will not load just white lines

Hi,

Does external display work fine? If you have not checked, connect an external display like desktop monitor or a LED TV which has VGA connector to your laptop's vga port. You may have to use some fn keys combination to switch from laptop display to external. If external display works fine then check the display cable connecting laptop motherboard to laptop display. And also check laptop LCD/LED screen. You may have to try another with another screen in such scenario.

My dell inspiron m5030 has a white screen any ideas what it is?

LCD video cable. Plus, to connect and activate an external monitor, you click Fn + F2, not F8.

No main video. external video vga works

Seems to me that you may be experiencing a BIOS issue I would go to Dell web site and download the BIOS again for sure to make sure the BIOS is back to working order. This may be the issue try this and any other drivers that have to do with video you may have a corrupted driver along the line here that is how I would handle it. Click Here

White screen

First see if the power on self-test (Fn+ Power) or the LCD BIST (D+Power) will run. The Diags are normally on a blue screen with white test, the LCD BIST is simply 4 Solid Color Screen looking for defects in the LCD panel.
If you hear beeps/windows sounds when the system boots and the LCD BIST test does nothing then the LCD has likely failed and you will need a new one. You can try an external monitor and see if you get video on an external screen.
If you don't then try these steps:

Hi lewis haywar,

Try to replace the LCD inverter in your laptop. Most common issues on LCD are due to failing LCD inverter. It fails more often than LCD cable or LCD backlight does.

Please let me know if this solution helped to resolve your issue.

My screen is going blue when it is ment to be white and it is red flicks in the background many thanks

Connect an external monitor to the VGA output of the laptop. Verify if it does the same. If the video is good, then the problem is the LCD or screen.

Laptop New LCD Screen Cycling Colors

It's probably the wrong screen, cable ,or inverter; in spite of what the repair shop tells you .
Also, sometimes the cable gets pinched if not installed carefully, or the cable connector may need to be re-seated.
Is your laptop a Dell Precision M60 ? I'll see which screen it's supposed to have.
