In my case on a LD-2040WH (a SA model-i'm in South Africa) it would throw out a E1 error about 15 to 20 mins into the cycle.
I pulled off all the covers, there were no leaks but the pump motor got seriously hot, It was over heating making the computer believe the pump was running dry/lack of water so E1 error.
Turned out to be the vario motor had packed up stuck on the top sprayer and three quarters closed at that. The pump was pumping like hell against a brick wall with almost no water flow thus overheating.
Interestingly in test mode the computer did return 19:99 for the half load vario test even though the motor was stuffed.
Easy test is pull off the cover, set to half load top and stop 5 mins into cycle and see where valve is. Stop and start again with half load set to bottom and after 5 mins see if valve has moved.

E1 is a common error in the LG Dishwasher range and is usually caused by the failure of the circulation pump and/or the impeller.
The motor and impeller are a complete unit.
Often what happens is the impeller breaks on the motor shaft and doesn't spin, therefore doesn't pump water.
There is a pressure sensor which indicates the lack of pressure and shuts the machine down with the E1 error being displayed.
The lack of pressure can also be from a water leak (as the owners manual suggests) also a controller PCB fault may produce an E1 error, however, the pump problem is extremely common.
Unfortunately, I have had 5 pumps die in 4 years and my dishwasher is only used about 4 times a week.

Please check at both ends of the drain hose and confirm that you do nit have a leak. Also, please confirm that water is not leaking directly under the dishwasher.
If you are certain that you do not have a real leak, check the impeller (under the mesh filter in the sump area beneath the lower dish rack) is not damaged and is firmly in place.
The E1 error code is a Leakage Error, detected by the motor spinning faster than it should if the unit is filled with water.
Please report back with what you find. Good Luck!

This happens to my LG dishwasher every 6 months or so. It also makes a groaning sound as if the system is starved for water. The resolve the problem by removing the dishwasher and laying it over on it's right side. I then remove the two plastic assemblies that are on the left side and I remove them from the dishwasher (you will need a vice grips to remove the hose clamps from behind them, you will also need to remove the round circular water intake plastic disk that is on the inside of your dishwasher on the left hand side right in the middle of the left wall) and clean them. Once the water can run freely through these plastic parts you will get a good water flow and you should be fine. Until you have time to do this I recommend putting a few quarts of hot water into your dishwasher once you start to hear the groaning problem. This solution should be very easy for anyone who is comfortable doing their own oil change. Oh, and turn off the power supply first.
