Hi. I have a Horizon T-62 treadmill. It stopped working during a workout and my son smelled an electrical burning smell and saw small puff of smoke. I removed motor cover and reset circuit breaker then turned on with no one on it. It immediately tripped the treadmill circuit breaker and I also smelled electrical burning smell. Any ideas on how to isolate the problem? Treadmill worked fine until then. The belt had been lubricated recently. thanks

Will horizon honor warranty if I return broken motor

  • Anonymous Jun 22, 2011

Prior suggestion was to replace motor. Treadmill has two motors. Any ideas for things I can try to isolate problem to one thing. I'm not convinced it is drive motor. After circuit breaker is reset and treadmill turned on I smell burning electrical smell. Could the mother board be the issue. How do I tell.

when motor starts it is eratic in speed and will cause light on elec. circit to dim and return to normal as motor surges. Was told it had a faint smell of hot elec. componets when it first happened. The on board circuit breaker was tripped as I first looked at it. Reset circuit breaker and control panel looked and acted normal.

All filters are clean and dust collector is empty, but when switched on it faltered a couple of times then started smoking and giving off an electrical burning smell.

Hi there. It sounds like something is shorting out inside your treadmill. If you're handy with electrical systems, I would recommend taking the cover off the treadmill and looking at all the connections for any wires that may be stripped/touching. Make sure the treadmill is unplugged when you do this! The only reason for the breaker to trip when you turn it on is for an electrical short or a serious malfunction (my guess would be the motor). If you come across a stripped wire, you can tape it up using electrical tape. If you aren't handy with this sort of thing, please call an expert! It can be very dangerous, especially if you are unfamiliar with the parts/how a circuit works! Good luck! Alex

Hi.

the circuit breaker probably only covers the motor anyway, and if this is the case then the problem has been isolated already.
it sounds like the motor has burnt out, and there is a short in it somewhere. the best (and safest) thing to do is to remove the motor and either just replace it, or have it tested by an electrician.
most repair shops will happily test a motor for free if you take it to them. it should only take a few minutes.
take the circuit breaker to them as well, as it is possible to have a faulty circuit breaker.

please feel free to ask if you need more advice.

hope this helps

if this unit is under warranty, then contact the store you bought the treadmill from.
they should be able to sort this out under warranty.

a puff of smoke, electrical burning smell, and a tripped circuit breaker mean there is an electrical fault in the motor. when the motor is removed, just make sure that the belt moves freely on the treadmil and has not jammed.

any faults like this would be covered under warranty anyway, so the first thing to do is contact the store, or manufacturers helpline for advice.

Unfortunately it sounds like the motor has burnt out and would require replacing.

As this treadmills come with a 10 year warranty on the motor if you've not had it for that long the you need to contact Horizon Fitness at the link below.

http://www.horizonfitness.co.uk/6/service/

If they're unable or unwilling to help you then please ask for further assistance and I'll see what I can do.

A replacement motor is in the region of $400 + fitting, but you could possibly fit it yourself.

As the treadmill is more than likely under warranty I didn't think you would have wanted to start checking things yourself which would void the warranty. First thing to check would be to disconnect the supply to the Main Drive Motor and switch on. If the circuit breaker trips then reset and disconnect the Incline Motor. If the circuit breaker still trips then ask for furterh assistance.

My T101 will be five years old in March. Never a problem with it. regularly lubed with silicone, lately the running belt heats up after 30 min. @ 3.5 and will emit a burning smell if not shut down.

Those symptoms point to the belt rubbing on something it's not supposed to. Look for belt material pieces or shaving. Inspect belt and if burning smell is still there, consider replacing it.

You must test the motor, and tight the electrical connection very well. and see if there some burn wires, or connector.in any board of the elliptical. See my personal TIPS.
And test the electrical wall, and see if the voltage is o.k .
However keep you eyes open, for any inconveniences. Suspect of the motor winding.

Motor has burning smell. belt and controller were

May I ask witch belt? Most treadmills have two belts, one to drive the gearing and one the patient walks/runs on. The tension and alignment are factors in the load on the motor. Too much tension on the belt the patient stands on will overload the motor. Alignment of both belts is a load factor. Eliminating the belts, tension, belt rollers, and control only power wiring and the motor is left. If the motor is the culprit call a local electric motor repair shop for testing and possible repair. Maybe cheaper than a new motor. : ) : )
