Hi,

Improve the Fixya.com experience for everyone by voting!

The first solution I'm suggesting works in my business (LAN installations) about 95% of the time. I trust that it will work for you.

Let's see if I can help you.

Begin by turning on your computer and your router

? Make sure your service provider has activated your account and services on the subscribed line. Please check with your service provider to confirm this.
? Make sure that you are using the latest drivers. You can download the latest driver from Driver Downloads Database.
? Make sure that you have entered the right username and password (case-sensitive) as given by your service provider. For example, in Australia: user@bigpond; in NZ: [email protected].
? Open Internet Explorer;
? Click on 'Tools';
? Click on 'Internet Options';
? Click on 'Connections';
? Click on 'Setup'
? Click on 'I want to set up my Internet connections manually . . .';
? Click on 'Next';
? Click on 'I connect through a local area network (LAN);
? Clock on 'Next'
? Click on 'Next' [This is not an error];
? Click on 'No';
? Click on 'Next';
? Click on 'To connect to the Internet immediately . . .; and,
? Click on 'Finish'.

That should have you online. However, if it doesn't get you on line, do the following: Click on tools again. Click on 'Diagnose Connection Problems' and follow the instructions.

The last choice is to use the Setup Wizard. It seldom works for me but you might more luck than poor me. Here are the instructions:

The Connect to the Internet wizard will guide you through the steps of setting up an Internet connection.

Open the Connect to the Internet wizard by:

• Clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button
• Click on Control Panel.
• In the search box, type network,
• Click "Network and Sharing Center"
• Click Set up a new connection or network
• Then double-click "Connect to the Internet".

All the best

Ben

Share Your Internet Connection with More Than One Computer- The Easy Way

Here is a simple way share your home internet connection with more than one computer. This will work for both wired and wireless and doesn't require alot of technical or computer skills to accomplish. I'm sure there are other ways, but if you're looking for a simple repeatable setup, here it is.

If you've got a dsl connection through a dsl modem, this TIP will work for you.
If you've got a cable modem, this TIP will work just as well.

Here's a list of what you'll need.

  1. Dsl or cable modem that works on your system and you can access internet with one computer (If you're using the internet, most likely you've got this already).
  2. Wired (Ethernet) or Wireless Router (wifi routers have 4-6 ethernet ports also).
  3. For Wired: Ethernet cable to connect modem to router.
  4. For Wireless: Wifi compatible computer or wifi card for your computer (follow manufacturer's instructions for proper install).
Procedure:
  1. Turn all components off. This includes anything on your existing network- computer, modem, printer and any router you may currently be using.
  2. With all power off, connect an ethernet cable between your modem and your new cable/dsl router(wired or wireless).
  3. Turn on the power to your new router only and let it boot up completely.
  4. Turn on the dsl/cable modem and allow it to boot. Since the router was booted first, the modem with recognize the router's MAC address (ethernet numerical address) and connect that address to the internet.
  5. Connect all the other components onto the router with the ethernet cables as needed and turn on the components- no particular order is necessary after the router and modem are booted. Your router will assign MAC addresses to all the ethernet components. Once the MAC address is assigned, your computer should work correctly with the internet and shouldn't drop out when the second computer is turned on.
  6. For wireless connections, boot up your computer with the properly installed Wifi card, airport card and allow it to "find" your router. Once you get confirmation of the signal, you're good to go.
Following this procedure will allow your modem, your router to use their designed software to connect you without a bunch of programming. You will actually enjoy having more than one computer sharing an internet connection.

Remember this procedure and follow the steps again if you lose power and have to reboot your network.

Acer Aspire 5733 Wireless connection lost

Check the wireless router and high-speed modem.

If the two are not powered on, or if the Ethernet cable connected the two is not completely inserted into both connection ports, you are unable to access the Internet on the Acer Aspire One laptop computer.

Activate the wireless Internet connection on the laptop computer.

Right-click the wireless icon on the desktop, then choose "Enable" from the pop-up menu.

Without activating the wireless receiver on the Acer Aspire One, the laptop is unable to detect any wireless network.

Select the appropriate network you wish to connect to.

Your computer may be attempting to connect to a different Internet connection, preventing you from access the network you desire. Right-click the wireless icon, select "Search for available wireless networks," then choose the network you want to access.

Restart the computer.

The system may have booted and failed to detect the wireless receiver. Restarting the computer corrects this issue.

hope this helps

    We have cable internet provided by Virgin. I am accessing the internet by plugging the ethernet cable dirctly into my laptop rather than via my DI524. Have just read a post that says I have to be connected...

    If you can connect to the internet using the Ethernet cable on your laptop then the cable modem is configured correctly.
    If you want to connect to the Internet using the D-Link wireless router then first you need to configure the D-Link wireless settings and then configure the wireless card in your laptop with the D-Link's wireless settings. Remove the Ethernet from the laptop and connect it to the WAN/Internet port on the D-Link wireless router.

    To secure your wireless network from unauthorized access,please click on this link and follow my instructions :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

    My wii could not connect to the internet

    How are you connecting to the internet with your Wii? are you using a wireless connection through a wireless router, or using an Ethernet cable? If its a wireless network, there could be many possible problems, and it would require further information to narrow it down to the correct solution. If its through an ethernet cable, be sure to check that all the cables are correctly and fully plugged in.

    Setup belkin wireless network

    Hi,
    1.Connect a Cat5 cable into the Ethernet port on the back of your cable or DSL modem. Plug the other end of the cable into the "Connect to Modem Internet/WAN" port on the back of the Belkin Router.
    2.Connect a Cat5 cable into the "Ethernet" port on the back of any desktop or stationary computers and then plug the other end of the cable into one of the LAN ports on the back of the Belkin Router. Start with port one and work your way up with subsequent computer connections.
    3.Turn the Belkin Router on by plugging the router into a power outlet. Allow 30 seconds for the router to fully boot up. All computers tethered to the modem via a Cat5 cable have access to the Internet.
    4.Open the Wi-Fi Wizard on your laptop and turn on the Wi-Fi antenna. Once turned on, the Wizard finds all network connections in your area. Connect to your network to establish an Internet connection. Complete this step for each computer not tethered to the Belkin Router with a Cat5 cable.

    Belkin router can't connect to internet

    This is part solution, part clarification request: When you say that you installed the setup software on your laptop, setup software for which: the modem, or the belkin router? Also what type of internet service do you have - Cable? DSL? If you are not sure, list your ISP. What operating systems do you have on your laptop and your main computer?

    You say that you connected the modem to your main computer - I am assuming that you mean that you connected your modem with a network or ethernet cable (the one with a connector that looks similar to but larger than a telephone's connector) to your computer's ethernet card, or NIC, port. Is anything connected by ethernet cable to the Belkin router? If you have not connected the modem directly to the router, it will not connect to the internet, and anything connecting to the Belkin router will not be able to access the internet as well.

    Try this: disconnected the power from your modem, then disconnect power from your router, and disconnect any ethernet cables from computer & modem, or computer and router. Connect an ethernet cable from the modem to the Belkin Router. (Ensure that you have plugged in the ethernet cable on the router into a port that is either set aside from others, or indicates "Internet", WAN, or something similar - it should be marked either with a different color, labled, or both). Now power on your modem. Wait until you see a steady "ready" light, green ethernet light, or the light usually lit for that model indicating it has completed its bootup tests and the internet connection is ready.
    Next, ensure the ethernet cable is connected from the modem to correct WAN or "internet" port on the Belkin Router, then power up the router. Once the router boots up completely, plug in a cable from your computer's (main computer) NIC or ethernet card or port, to a port on the Belkin Router (there should be more than one port available, generally numbered "1, 2, 3" and so on - in a group, seperate from the WAN or internet port). Once you are sure you have the cable plugged into one of the correct ports, and if you have windows, restart your main computer.

    Now on your main computer, check to see if you have an internet connection. If you do, you can now resume running the router's software setup on your laptop, which sounds as though it was walking you thru the setup process to connect you via wireless connection to the internet. Report back if you have any success, or if you have any further problems, and best of luck! Hope that info helps

    Connecting Laptop wireless and Desktop wired to the router

    Do you need to see the desktop or just share folders from each other? If the latter then you need to do the following:

    Use Windows Explorer and select a folder you want to share. Right click and select sharing and security.

    On the sharing tab click on Share this folder. Enter a share name ( I like to enter the PC name _folder name; Rick1_Downloads)

    Click on Permissions. If your ok with everyone using the PC's and Laptops having access then highlight Everyone and click on Full Control.

    Do this on each PC and Laptop.

    That should be it or darned near close.
