The magnetron is failing, "heats food" and in some cases gives off a burning smell, "classic symptom" repairs will run close to a new microwave oven or more.

I have a maytag model mmv1164ws when you turn it on makes a buzzing and smells like something burning!

Something is burning, there are high voltage parts in a microwave oven and they wear out. You probably need a new diode. Part number WPW10492276 google it

Microwave makes a loud buzzing noise and emits a burning plastic smell

This indicates the magnetron has failed, buzzing sound and odor are classic symptoms. It is cheaper to replace than have it repaired.

Have ge profile spacesaver xl sensor. will not heat strange buzzing sound and burning smell. clock, light, vent still work

This is most likely a defective magnetron, especially with the burning smell. There are two other parts that can be a problem, the high voltage capacitor and diode, all three work together to heat food. If the magnetron is the culprit, probably cheaper to replace the microwave oven.

My Kenmore 721.626222 which I have had about 6 years, runs but does not heat. There is also a strange smell - something like a burning smell.

When the oven does not heat, the problem is usually due to the magnetron failing. It the part that generates the microwaves that heat the food. It fails by shorting out causing a loud buzzing noise. The burning smell is the being magnetron overloaded due to the short. It not worth fixing since the replacement cost of a magnetron is close to the price of a new oven. Sorry.

When I close the door and begin to try to heat something I immediately hear an abnormal low buzzing sound. If I let it run I smell what seems to be something burning. Obviously this does not sound safe...

There is no easy fix on a micro wave oven. It is an extremely dangerous appliance and any repair is best left in the hands of a qualified repairman.

Making loud buzzing sound & smells like wires burning.

That is the Magnatron or the Hi-Voltage transformer. If I could smell it I could tell the difference. The transformer will produce smoke more so than the Mag.

My Whirlpool MH2155XPB2 microwave just started making a loud buzzing sound when in use. I also am smelling an electrical burn smell.

please dont use this microwave any more its about to go with a very big bang and maybe a bright flash??? my bet is the capacitor is leaking, thats why it smells? realy what you have here is a fire wating to get started, fed by the 1000,s of volts stored in the cap thats just bursting to get out, and its going to very soon, all in one go too!!!! trust me,,, when the cap blows its going to sound like a very big rifle has been fired off in your kitchen, and if you think it smells now???? wate and see what it smells like after its gone bang!!!! its a comon fult,,,,,bump it now!

Burning smell and won't heat.

If it buzzes real loud it's probably the high volyage diode. However some times if it smells it's the transformer. Usually the diode is a cheap fix ~$10.00 but this model the diode is $50. It's number 50 on the link below. Let me know how it works out or you need anything else.
