Checked items suggested. Pulled battery & charged.

Generator starts in both automatic & manual modes.

Have a very faint display on the controller. ( have to look at the right angle to see it,)

    Battery voltage shows 13.4.

Generator & battery are 1 1/2 years old.

    Thoughts on increasing display?

    thanks

Hi Scott,

Since the generator starts but there is no power to the control board, there is an electrical problem inside the generator.
First check the circuit breaker at the back of your generator. If the breaker is on, then your generator is in serious trouble.
Call a repairman, but also keep in mind you may need a new generator.

Hope this helps. If it does, I'd appreciate a 4 thumbs up. Thanks,

Handie Andie

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly. My research has the model number of your generator engine as GT-990 Is your generator model number 05506? Or something other than that like 5785 or 5744? I found the service manual for the engine already. I really need to know what your genrator model number is please. 05506 whisper series, 5785 and 5744 are the Guardian series by GENERAC.

Try disconnecting the three connectors P1-J1, P2-J2 and P3/J3 from the controller and reconnecting same.

    The serivce manual is here:

    http://www.zabatt.com/Generators/product...

It does little to help with you no display problem

As a tech I would be locating both F1 and F2 fuses. After verification of the fuses next sterp would be to locate the main board transformer.

    tranformer checks

Pin 1 & Pin 2 are the primary winding. Check for resistance across P 1 and P2

the rest of the windings can be laid out in 2 ways one is individual windings and the other is a string / tap winding

    Individual windings

    3 - 4 resistance

    5 - 6 resistance

    7 - 8 resistance

    String tap winding

    Pin 3 to pins 4 5 6 7 and 8 for resistance.

Somtimes you have to read power off of each transformer winding

the output power is usually 24 VAC or less

the most common outputs are 3.3V, 5V 15V and 24 VAC

reading output power on the main PCB pin 4, pin 6 and pin 8 for AC voltage.

If you have no voltage the Main Board transformenr has failed.

Main board transformers fail mainly due to other component failures on and off the board, and corrosion on the board or at the connectors. Finding the failed part is often very difficult with a failed main board. You end up having to read out each and every circuit connecting to the main board! Otherwise you can install a new board and have it fail in seconds!

I forgot to ask which controller you have?

    R-100

    R-200 or R200A

Check to see if you have 12 VDC across the red and black wires of the control panel.

During the engine start-up and run, +12 volts DC is

applied to the control module via the red (+ positive)

and black (- negative) wires. The voltage from the

main engine control latch/crank PCB Wire 14 (run circuit)

powers up the control module for governor system

operation. The control module receives a speed

"sensing" signal from AC output frequency via the two

    (2) blue wires.

The control module sends variable signals to the

stepper motor via the orange, yellow, brown and

black wires to position the stepper motor and throttle

linkage to obtain a steady 50 or 60 Hz. (selectable on

    the control module frequency switch)

Also check that the black wire is actually providing a ground.

    Perform this test also:

TEST 18 - CHECK DC VOLTS AT TERMINAL 14

    OF TB1

    DISCUSSION:

This test will determine if control board action is delivering

battery voltage to the Wire 14 circuit. Wire 14

circuit voltage is required to (a) power the engine ignition

system and (b) open the fuel solenoid. Terminal

board TB1 is housed in the generator control console.

See "Control Console Components" in Section 4.1).

    PROCEDURE:

    1. Use a DC voltmeter (or VOM) to check for battery voltage

at Terminal 14 of terminal board TB1.

    2. Connect the positive (+) meter test lead to Terminal 14,

the common (-) test lead to Terminal 0 (ground).

    3. Set the AUTO-OFF-MANUAL switch to MANUAL. The

    meter should indicate battery voltage.

    RESULTS:

    1. If battery voltage is not indicated, test Wire 14 between

terminal board TB1 and the control board for an open

    condition.

    a. If Wire 14 is good, replace the control

    board.

    b. If Wire 14 is bad, repair, reconnect or

    replace as necessary.

I think this test will pass as you said it works in manual.

Your response must have gone to another expert because I had to dig through my site historical files to see your response. Anyway as far as the intensity issue the onlything I can tell you is to look on the back of the control display module. Usually thee is ONE tiny screw for an intensity adjustment. What ever you do please do NOT tap on this module with any force. You can cause more LED problems. (don't ask how I know!) I can not remember the number of the potentiometer that is to be adjusted but as I said there is usually only one one the very back of the module. I can't remember if you have to unmount the display or not to gain access either. Make sure you mark the potentiometer where you started because some of these have that same screw that adjusts current transformer sensitivity and you end up having a generator that wil not start will a loss of utility power or... will not auto switch back to utility power.

Generac natural gas generator has no control lights and won't even turn over in manual mode. Brand new battery has been installed. 7.5 amp fuse appears to be good.

Appearing good and IS good is two different things. Use an ohmmeter to test continuity on the fuse. also look at the traces on the display board for open conditions or scorched components.

With the engine off, check the exciter brushes and slip rings which supply magnetic power for the alternator winding in the stator. Also, check the motor-to-alternator mechanical coupling. Check the breakers for tripping. To service beyond this point requires a schematic of the alternator, a voltmeter, plus knowledge of what the schematic is telling you. Good luck!
