It is plug and play. Are you getting 5 or 12vdc feeding the IR PCB assembly?
You need a scope to look for output pulses coming out of the IR board when it receiving the signal from the remote controller.

1) Test the remote:
The remote control puts out IR (InfraRed) signal that human eyes cannot see, to find out if the remote is sending out the signal or not you just point the remote at the digital camera's Lens (Digital Camera can detect IR), you should see flashing light on the camera's screen when any one of the remote button is pushed. If you do see the flashing on the camera, then the problem is in the TV IR receiver or the main logic board; more troubleshooting with scope will be needed to look at the signals.

2) If the remote checked out OK, then look at the back of the TV for the "REMOTE INPUT", use a mini-phone plug and insert the plug ino the remote input jack in and out a couple times to clean the switch contacts that select between the front IR receiver of the TV or the rear panel IR input jacks.

Thanks for your reply! Your first question is too much for my tech knowledge :-(( I tried my best but could not find the Remote Input mentioned on the last paragraph. I will try to check the manual for its location. The remote works perfect on my dad's TV, so it's not the problem,

I have a Sony Bravia 32-inch TV KDL-32L5000. How can I determine if a remote control is bad or the IR receiver in the TV?

Take remote and place on top of AM radio set to 600 on dial. Turn up volume and make sure you have a good battery in remote. Depress button - should hear some beeps on radio - every button you push will produce distinctive beeps. Any button that does not is a bogus area in remote. All buttons should work for remote to be totally good.

Often some heavily used buttons go bad but there are work arounds for that.

Ir receiver not working

Fresh batteries in the remote control first and foremost. Also check the white buttons on top that the "tv" is selected. If it doesn't turn red, remote might be bad or need cleaning depending on age/condition. A little (very little) bit of grease or vaseline on the battery connectors is a good fix if they are corroded. be careful don't get that on your skin, use gloves.

From your description, I would suspect that the IR receiver inside the TV has failed. If the TV can be controlled from the panel buttions, that adds to that suspicion. Please note that it is possible that the receiver has poor solder connections and that this can be easily fixed. Even with replacing the receiver, the part would cost only around $10 or so. Check with local repair shops for a cost to repair this.

KDL-32L5000 model cracked screen

Someone or something impacted the screen. There is absolutely no other way this could have happened. The cost of replacing the panel will far exceed the cost of a replacement TV.
