Have a Delta R10000 Faucet and a Delta Escutcheon for 1700 Series cover to go over the faucet. New install on a sterling tub shower. What size hole to drill so as to fit the Cover over the valve Should it be 3" or 3 1/2"? The cover has a black gasket on the inside and a white gasket on the outer rim. Currently there is a 2 " hole so as to fit the valve but the cover will not fit very close to the thin shower wall

You should have a template in the kit for this. The web site will also have detail specifications.

Short of that (and I've been there) use a piece of cardboard. Trace the outside edge. Now make in inner circle the width of the flange area. Cut out the remaining center. Align it to the shaft on the wall and mark your cut line. Some of these have a single screw that attach the cover to the hardware in the back. Being a thin wall you may need to set back the plumbing tree to get the cover all the way in. If you are soldering the fittings be sure to remove the nylon sleeve first as the heat can damage it.

There should be a dirverter on the tub spout. It will be either a knob to pull up or a ring to pull down on and hold untill the water comes out the shower head.

If there is no dirverter go buy a new tub spout with one.. The prior owners may have installed the wrong spout.

Your fixture body may be corroded beyond repair. Since you've replaced all the rebuildable parts, I'd suggest you get a plumber to check it but expect that you'll need to replace the faucet. Get a modern "cartridge" (Delta, Moen or Kohler) fixture that can be easily repaired indefinitely.

Water sprays out the diverter

Remove hot/cold button in handle, remove screw/pull off handle. Remove the two screws in the wall plate/remove plate. Use a wrench to remove the diverter assembly. Get new diverter assy and reinstall eveything. You don't need to turn off the water.
