Generally the cause is one of 3 things. 1 Damage to the stylus or dirt. 2 Lack of pressure to the stylus. 3 Anti-skate control set to low.
First check the stylus you should feel it sticking in you finger a bit. 2 Has the weight on the end of the arm become lose? Adjust for the correct tracking weight of the cartridge. 3 Check the manual for what the anti-skate control should be set to.
The cartridge maker often specifys what the weight should be so look on the box if you still have it. Otherwise do it in stages for both weight and Skate control, but 1g sounds very low, try increasing the weight in stages, but I would try 2g first. If the sound is tinny check you have got the connections correct to the cartidge. The anti-skate is trial and error. You will know when the sound is rich and there's not a great deal of rumble and the stylus doesn't slip out of the grooves. Heavy rumble would mean to much weight by the way.

Thanks for the response Grubhead.
Its a Technics SL 1200 MK II purchased during my visit to Amsterdam.
I have installed a brand new Shure M44G cartridge. - Yes as advised by u I have checked and its does "stick"to the finger.
It worked fine for 3 months and now ALL OF A SUDDEN I started facing tracking problems on ALL my records.
A soon as the stylus hits the groove its starts sliding towards the centre of the platter.
The sound quality is AWFULL and it sort of - crakles - along. quite jarring and sounds scratchy ... if u can understand what I mean.
The settings are as follows:
- The counterweight is set to 1 Gram
- The antiskate is set to 1
- The records are clean
- The height of the tone arm is as per specks - ie parallel to the record.
- The turntable is seated on a flat surface - and has been in the same position since the begining.
I am not a DJ and this turntable is used for listening to my collection of music.
I'vd apperaciate if you could help me out with what could have gonewrong - all of a sudden.
It was working perfectly FINE
AsI am locatedin Mumbai - India and as such have no local distributor of either Shure or Technics..........
