Installing Tomtom voices

I've downloaded some voices for the Tomtom, and put the .bmp, .chk & .vif files into the voices directory, but when I am not able to select the new voice when setting preferences - I can only see the old pre-loaded voices.

I have also tried putting the voice files into the Tomtom root directory, but same result.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

You can look in the tomtom voices directory with windows explorer while tomtom is hooked to the pc, be sure the voices files are in the voices directory on tomtom.

Will not load says cannotcreate this file G;antitheftw.bmp have reloaded tomtom home and still same.

antitheftw.bmp That file cannot be written to the Drive, "G" If possible, ensure there is a "G" drive, or set it so there is. Also ensure that the "G" drive, is not a read only, setting, if there is a "G" drive, make a blank, notepad doc, and call it antitheftw.bmp, that may just fool it into working. Or simply find the real file, and either put it where it wants or copy it to the GPS, files folder.

I cant seem to download my recent stewie voice i bought from pigtones to my tomtom one 3rd edition

It's been a bit, but I think I have an answer for you.

http://create.tomtom.com/manuals/create-your-own-content/

Follow this link, then go to the link marked Voices, then click "Create an Index File".

Basically, the TomTom voices are 2 parts: the audio itself, and a really simple text document that tells the TomTom how to identify it. open the .vif file with something like Notepad, and change the necessary data as shown. Save it, then the next time you plug your TomTom into the computer, you should be able to access the Voices folder.

Drop the 2 files into the voices folder, unplug, the TomTom will reset, and you should find Stewie insulting your driving skill in no time. ^_^

Computer voices

Hi,

Thanks for the acknowledgement.
Sometimes ( mostly in fact ) there is more than one files ascociated with a voice. One file is for the Icon to show you on the tomtom what voice it is ( its the little picture ) . the other file is the voice data itself. So , in that case you would need to download both files to get the voice. Once you have them on your PC you need to copy both files to the "Voices Folder " on your TomTom SD card or Hard Drive ( some tomtomts have a small hard drive fitted ) .
OK , so once you have the files on your TomTom and in the right folder you would then need to switch on the TomTom and go to preferences , then change voice in order to select that voice on your TomTom.

Good luck.

There are no speaking directions on my TomTom GO720 e.g. for 'turn left' or 'take the next exit' or 'continue for 3 miles'. It only beeps for speed cameras etc. We have ticked all the boxes on the sound...

Hi there

As the TomTom is making beeping sounds, its a good indication that its not a hardware fault, it sounds to me its a software issue.

What you could do is try to reinstall the voices on your device. To do this, follow these steps:-

I presume you have TomTom Home installed already, if not you can download it from
http://www.tomtom.com/home

STEP 1 Make a Backup
  • Connect your TomTom to the computer and switch it on
  • Open TomTom Home
  • Click on 'backup and restore' and make a backup if you haven't done so already
Once the backup has been made, please do the following:-

STEP 2 Remove the existing voice files
  • Open My Computer, you will see the TomTom as two removable drives, one will be the internal memory and one will be for the SD card slot on the device.
  • Click into the Internal memory drive, you should see a whole load of files and folders.
  • You should see a folder called LoquendoTTS or Loquendo, click into this folder and delete the contents (all the files and folders inside the loquendo folder)
  • Go back to the root directory of the TomTom and delete the folder 'Voices'

STEP 3 Download and Reinstall the voices via TomTom Home
  • Go back to TomTom Home
  • Click on Add Maps, traffic and Voices
  • Select Voices. Loacate the voice of Jane and Tim and add them to your device
  • Go back to the main menu of TomTom Home, click on Add Maps, traffic and Voices -> Computer Voices and install the voice of Kate or Simon (UK English computer voices)
  • Close TomTom Home and also Close it from the system tray. (in the bottom right hand corner of your screen down by the computer clock, you should see a red icon for TomTom Home, Right click on it and choose 'exit')
STEP 4 Install the Clear Flash Tool from TomTom
  • Once Home has closed completely, please download and install the clear flash tool from:- http://www.tomtom.com/updates/clear_flash/clear_flash.exe (Home must be completely closed, otherwise it may not install correctly)
  • Accept the license agreement and keep pressing the Next arrow until the clear flash tool has installed.
  • Your device will start flashing to say there is some activity on your device
  • When your device has finished flashing on the screen (might take a minute), use the 'safely remove hardware' feature of your PC to disconnect the TomTom
  • Switch the TomTom off then take it out of the dock.
STEP 5 Test the voices

  • Switch the TomTom back on, but not connected to the dock
  • Let it load up to the main navigation screen
  • Tap onto the menu and tap onto 'Change Preferences -> Voice Preferences'.
  • Select a non-computer voice i.e. Jane or Tim and press test. You should now hear the voice instruction
  • Try selecting the voice of Kate or Simon i.e. the computer voices, and press test, you should now hear the computer voice.
This should get the voices working again, if not it might be worth giving TomTom Support a call and they can talk you through it.

Hope this works for you

regards

Set up voice John Cleese

Hi,

You need to put the File / files associated with the voice onto your SD card in the Voices folder.

Use an SD card reader and your PC to look on the TomTom SD card. Find the folder called "VOICES". Copy the John Cleese voice files into the "VOICES" folder.

Once this is done put the SD card back in your TomTom. Switch on. When the TomTom starts up , tap the screen and select "Preferences" , then move through Preferences until you find "Lips" icon and under that it will say " Change Voice" . Tap the Lips Icon , then move right or left until you find the required / John Cleese Voice and select that. Your Tom Tom should now give directions with the John Cleese voice.

Please note: Some voices that you can download free of the internet can contain viruses or if you are unlucky they can contain faulty data which can effect the workings of your TomTom.
As a precaution , before you copy or alter or add anything to your TomTom SD card you should make a Backup of your SD card onto a PC. The if anything gets upset on your SD card you can always format it and restore the origonal data.

Good Luck.

TomTom One Europe

What is happening is your map updates are being copied onto your memory card without overwriting the old maps hence you are running out of memory.

In the tomtom home browser you should be able to delete your old map before installing the new one. Make sure you have a back up of the map card before you try this though so you can reinstall if something goes wrong.

Also have you replaced the voice prompts on your tomtom? The voice files take up a lot of memory so if you have put new ones one without removing the old ones you will be wasting memory.

There is one window in TThome that lists eveything installed on yuor card so have a good look at this and see what you can get rid of.
