The picture on my TV set is messed up. It's a 42"
plasma unit that's a bit more than 2 years old. It's no longer under
warranty. The colors are off. The picture almost looks like a somewhat fuzzy
Andy Warhol painting. On multiple occasions I've tried adjusting it and doing a reset from the
menu but nothing changes. I brought it to a shop authorized to repair all major
brands. The technician did diagnostic tests and told me the problem
is with the X-Main Circuit board. He says that it controls the X vertex and
that it needs to be changed. Planar no longer sells parts for this unit. The
part number is 50503911006. I want to know how I can get this TV set working
properly either by fixing the existing board, finding a place that can provide
me with a Planar replacement board, getting a compatible part from another
manufacturer, or any other reasonable solution. If you go Online and
search for PD42ED, it seems to be available from HP Small Business but I never
seem to be able to get anywhere when I try to call them. Suggestions?

Well, the solution is to replace the optical block on your TV. You can try the "Repair Service" link on the right..just put your zip and you'll get a whole host of service centers in ur area. Mention u were referred by Fixya and you just might get a discount :)
Im afraid there is no other option other than getting a repair job done..

Have you manually inspected the circuit board yourself? There might be an obvious component that is burnt out, that would not be too hard to replace by soldering a new one on. Perhaps you can have the shop technician that did the diagnostics show you the circuit board that he feels is at fault. It may be something as simple as a few electrolytic capacitors bulging or spewing electrolyte. Also check the power supply board for toasted components. Just an idea.
Try this plasma service manual go to page 40 for service menu settings.

Hope that helps...........
Your best option is to replace the unit and sell that one for parts to someone who might need it. I would recommend a brand like Panasonic as they will offer service/parts for a much greater period of time.
I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Lee
Why not contact Palnar themselves to fix your problem..?

I sent the following message to [email protected]:
"Please let me know if you still have parts for the Planar PD42ED Plasma TV. By the way, when I clicked on the following link that's supposed to show pictures of the TV, of the 2 pictures displayed, the first image with the screen turned on is incomplete and the second picture has the TV powered off. Therefore, I can't really see the problem described for the screen."
As soon as I receive a reply, I'll post the answer I receive.
Thank you.
In response to your suggestion, I have already contacted Planar and they told me that they don't have parts because the manufacturer/supplier is no longer in business.
Instead of buying another TV set, I would rather try to find a less expensive solution. That's why I am hoping one of the experts can help me. Besides, selling the TV set I own introduces me to another problem which requires more time and effort on my part, more specifically, trying to find a buyer for a defective TV.

I contacted them using a link on their site and asked them to let me know if they can get me the part I need. As soon as I get a response back from them, I'll post it to this site.

Planar has already provided me with the actual Shop Manual for the PD42ED unit. When I looked at the contents of the PDF file you provided me with, I don't know if this manual applies to my plasma TV. There's nothing saying it's for the Planar PD42ED plasma TV. The information contained on the page you recommended reading may or may not apply. The TV is currently sitting in the repair shop. The technician there did diagnostic tests and told me what the problem was, more specifically, the X-Main board has to be changed. Please get back to me and tell me if following the reset protocol described starting on page 40 of the manual you asked me to read will fix my problem.
Thank you.
I tried changing the menu setting multiple times and even set it to default settings. Performing that action didn't solve my problem.
I'll be going to the shop on Monday and I'll have a look at the unit. I already asked the technician and he told me he didn't see anything obvious but I'll have a look for myself.

I have copies of both the User Manual and the Service Manual. Before having my TV checked out by a qualified technician, I read both of these manuals and followed instructions given to make the adjustments to the screen image. The problem continued. After the technician ran his diagnostics tests, he told me the problem was with the X-Main board. This part needs to be replaced. He doesn't repair boards. I need to find a place that can either fix the board or replace it at a reasonable cost. There are two part numbers for this board: LJ92-00748A and 5053911006.
Thank you.

I've already gone this route a couple of times. It always ends the same way; we cannot help you because this model is no longer supported and parts are NOT available. But Planar was kind enough to send me a PDF version of the Service Manual for this TV. I provided it to the technician when he ran his diagnostic tests. He told me the problem is caused by the X-Main board. I need to either replace this board or have it repaired at a reasonable cost.
Thank you.
