The equipment I refer to is: Yamaha RX-V663 AV Receiver Samsung LCD TV: LN46A650 Comcast - Motorola DCH6416 DVR I have connected the DVR to the Yamaha Receiver with a HDMI cable, and the Yamaha to the TV also with an HDMI cable. When I press the Info button on the Samsung TV, it responds with an input signal of 1280 x 720i @ 60Hz. My problem is that I believe this should be a 1080 signal, as the Yamaha has a recent, high quality video capability. I then took the same cable that connected the DVR to the Yamaha and plugged it into the TV's HDMI port. Watching the same channel and program (HD content) as the previous test, it now shows 1920 x 1080i @ 60Hz. Reconnecting the HDMI to the Yamaha again returns the TV's signal indicator to 1280 x 720i @ 60 Hz. I've spoken with Yamaha Tech support and tell me this isn't Yamaha's problem, rather a problem with the cable box. The Motorola cable box is set to 1080i output and no changes are capable of being made in its setup. I would really like to understand why this is happening and how to resolve it. Please advise and thank you.
I believe the yamaha does not support 1080p signals, i have the same reciever my tv is only720p so its not a big deal for me, but the reciever can not pass 1080p
Have you compared the HDMI cables? I have seen some that will transfer at 2.23 gbps and others (1.3) at 10.2 gbps. I too have the rx-v663 and the Samsung 46" 650 model. I am still learning it, but I have noticed not all stations seem to be 1080i. If anyone has some Ipod help I need to figure out how to see my pictures via the ipod. I can get the music to play but I can't seem to get to the picture prompt.
I have the same problem. I wound up connecting component cables out of my Motorola HD DVR STB directly to my Samsung LN52A650 and now I get 1080i. I still have the receiver connected HDMI to the cable box but turn on the receiver just for the sound now.
First let me say that you have stated your problem very well. I completely understand the issue you are having.
I have been repairing a/v systems since they started selling them.
By your description of your problem, it is obvious that you have isolated the problem to the Yamaha.
Despite what Yamaha tech support say's, it is their problem.
I have been dealing with tech support for a lot of different manufacters for many, many years. I repair under warranty over 20 different brands, but not Yamaha. I have repaired plenty of Yamaha receivers but none with this particular problem.
It is not uncommon to find tech support people who don't know as much as they should about their own product.
Since I don't have the instruction manual or a service manual forthis model I can only be of minimal help.
What you can do, if you have your instruction manual, check it over closely for this subject on how to change the settings for the HDMI. If you can not find this particular issue, it is possible that the Yamaha doesn't support 1080i. I would be surprised if it did not, but stranger things have happened.
Another thing you can do if you can still not find an answer to this problem is to take it in to an authorized Yamaha service center.
If you have recently purchased this Yamaha, it will be under warranty. They get at least 1 year. Tell them the problem you are having and if they do not know how to solve it right there on the spot, or give you an answer that satisfies you, leave it with them
to have it fixed. If they are an authorized service center they will have to fix it or get it replaced for you if it is under warranty. It may need a firmware upgrade to the digital board. If that is the problem, then they can do it for you.

I have the same problem, and the Yamaha tech support said the same answer. "It is not thier problem, i have to change my cable box".
Just to clarify, The HDMI cables are 1.3 and when i connect the same cable directly to the TV it is 1080i. Another thing to notice is , the HDMI whihc connects my DVD player brings out 1080i without any problem. I guess for DTV/Cable some settings needs to be changed. However te yamaha tech support is not bothered.
