How do I replace the blue tube and is it worth the cost?

You didn't say what the model number of the TV was, so I'll guess it has tubes for each color Red, Blue and Green. The blue tube is probably weak. If you really want to spend the money on replacing the tubes (costly) you may be able to buy a similar sized flat screen TV for less than the cost of the repairs.

this was the display of your tv.. it been worth repairing, but it was most likely replace if the problem was big.

The tv CRT-(tv tube) screen itself is broken now or dying already and tv PCB board broken require replacing too,tv will still work after replacing PCB board or repairing it but tv will not be watchable becauuce tv screen will all mess up like screw up picture colors will have black and blue colors be all over the tv screen.Tv now will not be worth repairing if require replacing CRT-(tv tube) will cost the same as a new tv if tries replacing CRT-(tv tube) if u still can buy it.Can't buy analog CRT-(tv tube) anymore.Sorry time to buy a new tv.

Many of these sets had problems with bad picture Tubes--they use a red, green and blue crt. Most commonly the blue gives troubles--The tubes are now only available on a rebuild basis--usually not worth doing as the cost is very high.

You may have a bad blue picture tube but there is a way to deal with this first----the set has a black plastic block with six controls---three are Focus(red,green,blue) the other 3 controls are Screen controls(red, green, blue)

Someone has to remove the entire piece on the frontof the set below the screen(usually a plastic part) most of the time it is secured with 3 screws on either side of the set in the back; once you remove the screws the entire piece should pull out(pull from right to left(it will not fall off or come out easy--it is held in with several large plastic pegs) With it removed there is an inspection plate with 4 screws-----the screen/focus block is behind it.

You need to look very closely at the block to identify the focus versus screen controls----one row left to right will be marked Focus and the other row left to right will be marked screen------YOU need to locate the Blue Screen control(they are black like the block) With the set on(be careful) go to a videoinput with nothing connected---if you see a blue screen as well as the input number turn the BLUE SCREEN CONTROL SLOWLY TO THE LEFT UNTIL THE BLUE is gone.

If this cures the problem you may only be buying yourself some time----if the blue picture tube is bad sooner or later this trouble may return----I have seen sets where this was adjusted and the set worked for a year or more with no repeat of the trouble----replacing the blue tube would likely cost you 400 -500 parts and labor.

There about $300-$500 and it's not worth fixing if it is the tube - if you replace only one tube it will be too bright relative to the other two and you'll have to under or over compensate to get a good picture depending how worn the other two tubes are.

Replace Blue Tube and re-align - Big job and expensive Tube cost min $300 + installation. You can see the tube arching internally?

if it is a KP65ws500 it is one of a group of sets made by Sony where all the picture Tubes(set has a RED, Green, and Blue Tube.) ARE BAD. Most of these sets had all three tubes replaced during a program Sony had. The tubes are NO LONGER AVAILABLE---the only way to get one is remove the tube and send it out for rebuild---most of these cost about 250-300 just for the tube.

The set is shutting down because when the screen goes bright blue it detects one of the CRT's(tubes) is pulling way to much current.

The problem with Replacing your Blue Tube is cost and----sooner or later the other two(red and green) are going to fail also.

best advice is maybe not to fix it.

I replaced dozens of the tubes in these sets when Sony had a recall and provided the tubes for free and paid for the labor etc.

After a typical picture tube ages it gets a coating of chemicals (carbon, phosphor and various metals form heater filaments) on the red, green or blue electron guns. This degrades any one or all three guns over time. There is a process to "zap" or rejuvenate the picture tube. A "good" TV repair shop will have the device to do this. The cost should be between 1 to 2 hours of repair labor. That equates to $75 - $150. The only thing is that this process does not clean the guns effectively and they can "cake up" again. Think of it as a coronary cleaning, it does not mean the "plaque" can build back up. It will, and usually within 1 to 3 years depending on how old the unit is and how long it is on per day. The other alternative is replacing the picture tube. 2 - 3 hours of labor plus parts. An average picture tube (after technician's mark up) costs anywhere from $100 for 13'" set to thousands. Looking at your model, it's a 31". I would guess at $400 - $500 just for the picture tube. I like Mitsu's. A good machine. Right in line with Sony on up. (and better in a number of occasions I have seen) When the cost of the repair is over 50% of the cost of the unit, that's when I declare it replaceable at the hospital system where I worked. (Over 900 TVs) You should weigh the price too.

Yes, worth fixing, sounds like convergence is out on the tip ends. Check papers for Convergence controls. See if have auto fix.
