Compaq presario V2110US backlight

Hi Fletcher,
Nowadays laptops come with an option to turn off the backlight to save power.
Since you have not included the model no of your laptop, i can't give specific info on how to turn on the backlight.
You can check the user guide of the laptop.
If that is not the case, the backlight board might have gone out and needs to replace it.
If you don't know how to do that, i would suggest you to contact a technician.

The monitor screen on your laptop is an LCD screen.

An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. It needs an additional light source.
The additional light source is a Backlight.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

LCD screens are a composite of layers. The layers are held together by a metal frame, much like a picture frame.
The Backlight is usually located on one side, accessed after removing one side of the metal frame.

As stated, a Backlight is a very small type of Fluorescent lamp, (Tube)
Very fragile, easily breakable, and not usually approached by one who has very little, or no experience in replacing.
More common the entire LCD screen is replaced, which includes the Backlight already installed.

A laptop also needs an Inverter to provide power, both for the LCD screen, and the Backlight.

90 percent of the time the fault is the Inverter.
I repeat, 90 percent of the time the fault is a bad Inverter.

An Inverter is cheaper than an LCD screen, and MUCH easier to replace than a Backlight.

Allow me to show you replacing an Inverter on an HP Pavilion dv6000 series laptop.
Granted, it isn't an HP Compaq Presario V6500 series, but the principles still apply the same,

The CCFL backlight bulb is on its way out. You can either purchase a new buld for the laptop screen or replace the whole screen itself.

What is wrong with the backlight? The computer screen is just dark? I would start with the inverter. The inverter is usually the problem when the screen goes dark but people think it is the backlight. The backlight alone is very hard to change too. Go with the inverter, I would bet that is the issue.

Keep in mind that if you have windows xp on your laptop it won't have the drivers for the wireless card. If you have vista on your laptop then choose vista and then the driver for the wireless card will be in there. Just download it and install it. The laptop should recognize the card at that point.

If the laptop appears to boot up but the display is black then -
You have a backlight problem, most likely a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please follow my instruction on this link for further informatiom :-

Yes by leaving the laptop on all the time you could burn out the laptops back light. Set your power settings to turn monitor off after so many minutes of non use to save this. Further more I would recommend a chill pad under the laptop to help keep the CPU from getting to hot.

lcd cable

It's one of the four.

The backlight or inverter is located at the bottom of the screen behind the bezel (plastic screen surround) it's an elongated circuit board hidden behind frosted plastic, you can't miss it as all the connectors from the motherboard and the screen are attached to it.
