I am having a problem with the tension on my Necchi. The botton thread tends to loop every few stitches. I have adjusted the screw on the bobbin case, but it still tends to loop. Sometimes the thread catches and gets stuck. How can I correst this?

On any machine, the lower - bobbin tension is adjusted with a small screw driver, used on the very small screw on the side of the bobbin. "Righty, tighty, Lefty - Loosy." If you stitch an inch of fabric, and the bottom loops come up, then... tighten the bobbin holder. If the loops pull down, loosten it.

Remove all the thread from your machine. Install a brand new needle. Raise the presser foot and re-thread the upper thread, making sure you are following the correct threading sequence. Confirm that the bobbin thread is threaded through the bobbincase properly. Now, perform another test stitch. Is the bobbin thread still looping?

If you have already tightened the upper thread tension and the bobbin tension is still too loose, then you may need to tighten the bobbin tension. First, mark with a permanent marker where the slash of the screw head meets the bobbin case. This will mark where the screw was originally set before you begin making adjustments and allows you to return the screw to that position should you need to.

Set the upper tension to the halfway point between the high & low number. This is what would normally be the standard.

Then gently turn the bobbin tension screw to the right 1/8th of a turn at a time. Then test. Keep adjusting until the bobbin thread tension is correct. The tensions are correct when the upper thread and the bobbin thread meet in the middle of the fabric.

loops under fabric means top tension needs to be tightened
try cleaning the top tension dial with some unwaxed dental floss and see if that helps. if it doesn't then the tension dial may need to be replaced
also check to make sure the spool of thread is not getting caught on the spool holder
also try a new needle--one that is correct for the fabric being sewed

Could be several things.

First, install a brand new needle, perhaps a top-stitch needle will work better because it has a groove in the shaft that protects the thread. Make sure the needle is the appropriate size for the thread you are using--a needle eye that is too small will cause the thread to hang or shred. When the needle penetrates the sandwich, the top thread forms a loop. If the eye is too small, the thread will not come back up through the sandwich, leaving a loop under the fabric.

Remove the top thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Set the top tension to the midway point and retest your machine on a quilt sandwich made of the same fabric layers as your project.. Tension problems are more evident when sewing multiple layers of fabric, so tweak the tension until the top and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the sandwich.

I don't believe you will have to adjust the bobbin tension, but in case you do, be very careful. Mark the tension screw setting FIRST so you can reverse any changes you make. Bobbin adjustments are made in very SMALL increments. Because I tend to use a lighter weight thread for my quilting, I have a specific bobbin case that is adjusted for my quilt thread and I keep my other bobbin for regular sewing. Then I don't have to keep adjusting the bobbin tension when going from sewing a quilt to something else.

Some machines do better with certain brands of threads than others.

you may have to adjust the tension of the Bobbin. There usually is a screw to adjust this on the bobbin housing(the part that holds the bobbin). Try tightening the tension by turning this screw clockwise a little bit. It may work for you. Also clean any debris from the bobbin compartment which may cause this problem also. Hope this helps..WF

Hi. If the bobbin thread is coming up on top, then the upper tension is too tight. Try loosening it.

Hi. The best way to adjust your tension is to use good-quality thread, a size 12 needle, and different color threads in the bobbin and on top. That way, it's easier to see which thread is loose. Sew a few inches, check, and adjust (make sure the pressure foot is DOWN). Stitch a few more inches, recheck, and adjust some more. Just move the adjustment knob a little bit each time.

You might also want to use a bit of unwaxed dental floss and floss the tension disks. That helps get rid of any old lint and pieces of thread that build up in there.

As a last resort, you might need to adjust your bobbin tension. There is a very small screw on the bobbin case that tightens/loosens the spring/lever. If you need to adjust it, only move the screw a tiny bit. But, like I said, this is only a last resort--almost all adjustments can be done by adjusting the upper tension.

looped stitches are usually caused by improper tension. when the loop is on the upper side, it may be corrected by loosening the top tension or by tightening the lower tension (turn the tension screws on the bobbin a hair at a time)

since using the machine only a few times it is best to clean the machine from dust (can use a can of air) blow air into the bobbin area and between the tension disks and under the throat plate.

make sure the machine is threaded correctly and bobbin is evenly threaded

#14 needle is way big for cotton napkin scrap. a #10 is good for most lightweight fabric. #14 is for sewing denim or levis, like that.

the tension problems on almost all machines regardless of price usually fall on the upper tension. the lower bobbin tension is factory set and it's rare you should ever need to mess with it.

if you have a drop in bobbin (top loading), tighten the adjustment screw all the way and then back it off 1/4 turn. if your machine uses a shuttle bobbin, tighten the adjustment screw all the way and then back it off in 1/4-turn increments until you can hold it in the air like a yo-yo and cause to bobbin case to fall slightly dipping your hand.

A dull needle and stitch length will also mess up your stitch. The idea is to narrow the problem down to one thing and one thing only -- UPPER THREAD TENSION.

So, if you have the right size needle for the job, with the right thread, and if your stitch length selection is correct (usually between 2 and 3 or 8-to-10 stitches per inch, the problem should be with your upper thread tension.

An easy way to fix this then is to remember: Loops on top, upper tension drop. Loops below, upper tension grow. If you get loops on top of your work, lower (drop) your upper thread tension to a lower number. If you get loops on the bottom, raise the upper thread tension.

Different stitches on the same machine will require different upper thread tension settings. Don't be afraid of it. Just remember the pneumonic: loops on top, tension drop, loops below, tension grow -- referring to upper thread tension.
