A few reasons
1) backlight burnt out (or broken)
2) loose or broken cable AND backlight burnt out (or broken)
3) Failed GPU (probably integrated into the motherboard on that model)
4) failed motherboard (same issue above)
Check by plugging in an external monitor- if you get a signal, your LCD need a new backlight (or inverter, an easy fix under $15 USD)).
Cheapest solution is to simply replace the backlight, but you'll have to diassemble the entire laptop lid/cover AND the LCD to get to the backlight at the bottom. (this could be under $20 USD to do). Often similar sized LCD's with different part numbers will work fine in different laptops (meaning, a 14" LCD mady by samsung or LG will be compatible with almost any same 14" LCD made by either, especially if it comes WITH the inverter!)...
