Powermac g4 will not turn

Switch lights and cooling fans kick but that is all, unit has been unused for some time, but was fine when last used

  • brian1976 Sep 04, 2008

G4 quicksilver 733/640. Does start up if left off all day. Stays on for 10 minutes then shuts down. After that, the time between the start up and the abrupt shut down gets smaller. All fans look to be working fine. I have tried everything except replacing the battery and the power supply. Other than replacing the power supply at added cost, how could i repair it myself before handing over £150?

I have a G4 with this same problem. One day the computer went into sleep mode and never woke up. Now when I try to power it on there is just a short kick of the fan but it does not turn on. I purchased a used power supply on ebay and replaced it but I still have the same problem.

This is a common problem with G4 Quicksilver. Your power-supply is defect and has to be replaced. I have 4 G4s in my lab with the same symptom: a short flash of the power-button light, sometimes it turns on, but mostly the machine is dead.

PowerMac G4 M8493. Machine one day started to turn off on its own. The period of time it would stay on got shorter and shorter until the last time it went off, it wouldnt restart. Pushing the power buttun turns the button light on, and the motherboard red light flashes. Thats it, no fans, no hard drives, nothing else. When the powerbuten is not pressed, the light goes out. PMU reset, 3.6v Battery replaced, power cord changed. Same problems. If it is the power supply, how can I be sure. And where can this be fixed for such an old model?

I have a airwell GC-30RCC when put on heat the fan on the indoor unit wont kick in it works fine on cooling and plain fan mode but not on heat mode the red fan light is on too

How do you get it to kick in ?.Fid you spin it by hand ,if that's what you did and fan runs then you have a bad capicator. If fan runs fine in cooling and not in heat then you have a bad board

Power mac g5 shows terrible damage in tower from leaking they swear mom board is fine but its hard to believe. are any of the other parts usable for a g3 to g5 imac or g4 powermac or emac

None of the parts are usable in any other machine.
The coolant from a liquid-cooled G5 PowerMac is toxic. If your G5 is leaking, disconnect the power cord IMMEDIATELY. Flush any skin exposed to the fluid with water for at least 15 minutes.
If you want to glove up and extract your hard drive from the machine so as to save your data, do it carefully. Other than that, my recommendation is to bag up the unit and handle it responsibly as toxic waste, using the same guidelines your area uses for antifreeze.

With the Dometic 3106995.032 thermostat fan switch set to "auto" the fan in the overhead A/C unit comes on (when system is set to "Furnace") as the temperature control is raised but the furnace doen't kick...

Hi, the wiring terminations are near consistent with a 24 volt ac furnace and I will tell you how a 24 volt stat is terminated. RC= 24 volts jumped to RH for red wire only. This would be for a central system with air and heat. W=white for heat, G= Green for Fan, and Y = yellow for cooling. I do believe it is wired correctly for your application. Please verify your units model and serial number and give me a clue as to what is taking place, and did you change the thermostat or make a part change?
Sincerely,

Powermac g4 shut down

OK it's a G4 iMac.
Burning smells coming from macs often indicate a failure in the power supply module. That said, the G4 iMac (in my experience) has been the most reliable iMac ever and power module failures are very rare.
Your best option is to find a Mac repair centre near you and take in in for a quote. But be warned - it will cost. For some reason known only to Apple power supply modules are expensive (but not as expensive as the equivalent volume of HP ink) and replacing them is not as easy as on many of the other computers.
If it is the power supply, you will not be able to switch it on again. Your data on the HD should be safe (unless the smell was coming from that - - I've had it happen!). So when you get to the workshop and you've had your quote, if you decide not to go ahead with the repair, ask the workshop to remove your HD and put it into an external case so that you can plug it in to another Mac and continue using it.
Let us know what the outcome is.

Monitor does not come on

The video card you used may work for the 2nd computer but not for the 1st because of the system requirements. They might be different simply because they are different models. check which video card is RECOMMENDED, NOT MINIMUM, and get the recommended video card.
However, if it is the right video card, then get it checked at a pc shop, like pcworld or somewhere like that and see what they think of it.
