Powermac g4 shut down
OK it's a G4 iMac.
Burning smells coming from macs often indicate a failure in the power supply module. That said, the G4 iMac (in my experience) has been the most reliable iMac ever and power module failures are very rare.
Your best option is to find a Mac repair centre near you and take in in for a quote. But be warned - it will cost. For some reason known only to Apple power supply modules are expensive (but not as expensive as the equivalent volume of HP ink) and replacing them is not as easy as on many of the other computers.
If it is the power supply, you will not be able to switch it on again. Your data on the HD should be safe (unless the smell was coming from that - - I've had it happen!). So when you get to the workshop and you've had your quote, if you decide not to go ahead with the repair, ask the workshop to remove your HD and put it into an external case so that you can plug it in to another Mac and continue using it.

An Apple Tech or Apple Store would perform tests on each suspect replaceable unit, identify the bad unit, and replace it with a good one. I sympathize with the fact that this type of service is unlikely in your country, but by the same token, you are not at all likely to find anyone who can provide you an answer to the particular question you are asking. Sorry.
Kernal panic

To reset nvram,
Press "cmd alt O F" at startup
Then enter:
reset_nvram (press enter)
reset_all (press enter)
A kernel panic can come from a lot of things (peripherals, corrupted file, or damaged hard drive or memory). The best is to check in the log file what caused the kernel panic, or to proceed step by step, checking one thing after the other, until the problem is resolved.

in your device manager do you have any with a yellow mark on them if so click on the small + which extends menu right click properties and uninstall any drivers. reboot go back to device manager or install hardware and install the driver you downloaded
they also may come with an install or setup file use this after removing old drivers

As a software guy, I would have to advise against piracy. :)
There are several ways to get Visio for cheap. If you are a student, there are discounted versions available online and in stores. Also, you can check with your school for even cheaper options sometimes. Try the university bookstore if available. Or a Computer Science department maybe.
If you are working, and your company uses MS Office applications, find out if they have the "Microsoft at Home" program. You can get MS Office applications for really cheap that way. I can get Visio through my company's "Microsoft at Home" program for a few dollars.

If you are in the middle of a contract, then cutting your wages is almost certainly a violation of your employment law rights. While I am by no means an expert on this matter, I did have a similar issue years ago - mid-contract wage cuts - and I hired an
employment attorney to fight the case on my behalf. It turned out that my employer was basically looking to scare people into taking the wage cut.
They got into some pretty serious legal trouble for their transgression, and nothing happened to me in terms of wage cuts after that. If you are between contracts, your employer can re-negotiate your salary, but as far as I am aware, if you are in an agreed-upon contract, they cannot just decide to reduce your salary.
