The governor does not keep the engine from over-revving. I removed the linkage at the governor shaft, and when it over-revs, it makes no attempt to correct it. Is it hard to dis-assemble the generator head from the engine? I do all my own repairs, but was told today that this requires special tools from Briggs and Stratton -- any thoughts? Thanks! Chuck

Magnetic reed switch near output is probably bad. Look for coil behind front panel, there is a small glass tube inside, with 2 small wires.

Do you have governor adjusted properly? Possibly "PidStu" question, but you'd be surprised how many I've seen. Can you move the governor linkage arm with your fingers or does it seem to be locked in position? If it is locked, it is adjusted improperly.

Try a static governor adjustment first as it simply be out adjustment.

Static Adjustment Procedure
Make this adjustment whenever governor arm is
loosened or removed from cross shaft. Adjust as follows:
1. Make sure throttle linkage is connected to governor
arm and throttle lever on carburetor.
2. Loosen nut holding governor lever to cross shaft.
3. Move governor lever toward carburetor as far as it
will go (wide open throttle) and hold in this position.
4. Insert a long thin rod or tool into hole on cross shaft
and rotate shaft clockwise (viewed from end) as far
as it will turn, then torque nut to 6.8 N·m (60 in. lb.).

Mark it sounds like there may be a problem with the air filter. If its revving and running to fast all the time clean the air filter.

The governor shouldn't need to be adjusted unless it has been bumped or removed. But, if your sure the problem is the governor, you adjust by moving the governor arm in the direction that opens the throttle valve all the way open. Remove air cleaner and filter to inspect while doing this to make sure. Then note that direction, keep in this position, then loosen small nut on governor linkage at base of unit. With a needle nose pliers, turn small center shaft of governor linkage(the part that leads inside engine) in same direction you moved the linkage in earlier step. While holding in place tighten small jam nut. This is called a static set, which is a factory standard. Also, make sure throttle cable is in wide open position when doing this. Good luck.

Check the governor spring and throttle linkages, something may have come adrift. Also check the throttle shaft and body for wear and excessive clearance which could **** in excessive air, upsetting the mixture.

Check for a broken spring on the governor linkage, follow your throttle control cable down to where it attaches to the throttle mechanism. In behind where the cable attaches you should be able to see a spring on the governor arm, the spring may have broken or somehow came out of its attaching point. Obviously be very careful about over-revving the engine, it could result in a broken connecting rod and a hole in the side of your crankcase.

One possible cause for this problem is debris,sticking,or frozen linkage between the governor and the throttle butterfly. Depending on the make and model of your engine it will either be a mechanical governor that has a arm that goes down into the case or a air vane governor that is behind the recoil shroud of the engine. Move all the linkage that connects between the governor and throttle and speed lever to make sure it doesn't bind or sticks. If it does pray a little silicone or wd 40 spray on it to help reduce friction. Also on air vane governors they can become stuck from debris that inhibits it from moving make sure there is nothing in the way of the governor. If all of the linkage is working properly and you still have the issue try adjusting the the fuel mix screws and the high rev. settings on the throttle lever (if equip.).

Check to see if the throttle shaft on the carburetor is actually moving (with engine off) Does it slow down when you move the throttle control on the dash?
Start it up and try moving the linkage on the governor shaft, if there is little or no resistance but the engine slows when you move it, most likely you have a broken governor gear inside the engine. Another possibility is that the screws that hold the throttle plate to the shaft have come loose and the plate is jammed in the throat of the carburetor
