Hello, I would like to retreive 5 message from my GE 5.8 GHz cordless phone system. The digital answering system will not pick-up when phone calls come in, nor am I able to playback the old messages. Any ideas? Thanks.

A few questions for you. Is the phone actually doing naything... can you make calls from it still. Do the buttons on the phone work?.

OK,I have been reading the manual, I guess that you already know how the phone works, just trying to determine a little more about the problem. What process are you using to get the messages back of the base station. are you
1. pressing the play button on the phone, and is the base station doing anything when you do.
2. pressing the play button on the base station and what happens when you do?
This info will help me work out what is happening with your phone

It sounds like the base station may be corrupted, can you disconnect it from the wall socket(power) for 10 mins and plug it in and try again. If that does not solve it, the symptoms also point to it having been hit by a lightning strike. Mostly because it cannot actually pick up the line, even though it does try to. The components that do this are connected directly across the phone line and are most affected by a blast down the line .
When you get mulitple symptoms, like you have, I have found in the past, that an Electrostatic Discharge and or energy ascociated with a lightning strike will cause those symtoms. Try resetting it first, but if that does not work, then it may be cactus...

You must have set "ON" the voice mailbox setting's to be able to record and store incoming call..
this features only enable when you are not able to pick up or attend the call, & able you to record your own Welcome Messages to the caller..

Hello, The phones are ringing when a call come in. We have had the phones for approx. 1 year. We had preset the answering machine to answer after the 4th ring, since a few weeks ago after the 4th ring, the answering machine will not pickup however it does show after a call as if there is a message even though there is no message. I have called it myself and it goes blank after the 4th ring. The buttons on the phones do work however when you go to dial a number the dial tone continues. This phone system is a cordless phone with one phone to sit on the answering machine, then there are two cordless phones on their own battery charges throughout our house. When I press play on the answering machine (50 message now but none on there), the number starts at 1 as if there were a message playing and will go through the 50 but no sound from the answering machine. So I don't know if the messages are playing. There is not a volume button. Hope this helps.
