I'm not sure about all the switches used in the vacuum, but I recently took some pictures of the power button assembly. The buttons in the picture below are (from left-to-right): Circuit Breaker, Brush Switch, Power Switch

The next picture shows how the plastic buttons that operate the brush and power switches should go together:

not the switches in the handle.
the one lower motor area that (i think) goes from the main motor to the brush motor.

It is kinda hard to keep the little white piece in place when reattaching it. I chose to lay that part face down in my hand and bring the vacuum handle to me. Just a tip if it helps!

FYI , I pulled my entire DC17 apart to clean every inch and over several frustrating days, did get it back to 100% working order! I took tons of pics and at the time, didn't take one of the reset, power and brush pieces, nor could I find any! Even though I finally got it, thank you for posting that one pic!!!

I turn on the vacuum and it does nothing but when i put the brushes down is turns on and the brush motor runs.....but the suction motor won't do anything.......help!

You have power so it can't be the switch or power cord. It is most likely the motor or the cord from the switch to the motor that is the problem. Start by checking these areas first.

I have a Dyson dc17 I have changed the belt cleaned the brush bar clean the bar motor reset the switch and still when i vacuum the brush bar just stops does not rattle. does not do it on bare floors or...

hooked rugs produce the highest amount of friction opposing the brush rotation, which can over heat the drive motor. try using a height setting that raises the brush so that it barely touches the pile. If this issue has been going on for some time, you may need to replace the drive motor.

I can't get the top lid off my dyson dc17. It's

You need to get a long handled t-15 driver or a t-15 bit and a bit holder and extension for a 1/4" drive socket set (12" or longer extension) to get this apart. There are only something like 6 pcs in there and once you get it apart, cleaning it is very easy. Here's a good website on how to take it apart and put it back together. I have done this and it makes a difference. Be sure to sanitize everything once you have it apart. Takes out any funky smells.

The cog belt is probably not aligned with the motor gear. Watch this video and follow its instructions closely.

The roller is not spinning do to motor or belt not working. If it is the motor then the machine will have to go back to dyson if it is the belt then that is an easy replacement.

In need of a picture of the on/off switch for Dyson DC17.

This is over a year too late, but perhaps this will help other people in your situation. Here is how the switch assembly should go together:
