Keyboard I have an HP Pavilion dv4145EA Laptop but the keyboard some keys are working some are not. The part number for the keyboard is 383495-031 if you coul tel me how to solve this problem or where to buy a new keyboard.

It is time to replace your keyboard. It is dying. You can buy the replacement keyboard at eBay.com (use your laptop's model number to search the compatible keyboard). Later, you can download the laptop's service manual and read it, so you can replace the keyboard by yourself.

You might have a hardware issue with your laptop keyboard. You have at least 2 options:

1) connect a "normal" USB keyboard to your laptop and use it, instead

2) run the On-Screen Keyboard (osk.exe) and access the characters/keys you want from there

Examine your keyboard to ensure your "Number Lock" key is not activated. This activation is indicated by the key being lit up. If the key is activated, press it to deactivate the lock. The number lock key will deactivate an entire segment of your keyboard

Start, click Run, and type regedit to open the Windows registry editor. In the registry, open the below folders.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\
Control Panel\
Keyboard\
Within the keyboard folder, you should have a string value named "InitialKeyboardIndicators" with a value of 0, 1, or 2. Below is the explanation of each of these values.

0 = Num Lock is turned OFF after the logon.
1 = Disable Num Lock.
2 = Numlock is turned ON after the logon. Hope this helps.

On my HP Pavilion DV9500 with Win7 64 bit (laptop was new in 2007 and had Vista), I have the same problem, and I press FN-insert/scroll key and this works as the print screen button. That's the function key together with the insert key, which is 2 buttons to the left of the print screen key.

You might have changed settings of stickey keys

Check the setting in start- control panel- ease of access center- make keyboard easier to use.

Go to sticky keys -uncheck the box.

Also check the other settings in it.

It will resolve your issue.

If yes.. if not..you might need to remove the keyboard driver from device manager.

You can help isolate the problem by plugging in an external keyboard,. If the problem is not there on the external but present ( at the same time) on the internal then you will need to disassemble the laptop and look at the HP part number on the underside of the keyboard and order one from ebay etc.. make sure its the exact part number as many look identical but the cables dont line up.

Does this computer KB work alright in SAFE mode? If it does then drivers and/or viruses are the problem. If it doesn't work in SAFE mode then it could be drivers and or keyboard. Now try booting into BIOS. At the date prompt you usually can type any keyboard letter. If the keyboard works here, then you definately have driver/virus issues. If not replace the keyboard.

Hit the NUM LOCK key in the upper L/H top of the number matrix.. should be all good..

The number lock is engaged on your laptop keyboard. usually that is FN+F11 keys or number lock is on by default in the BIOS setup.
Check and see which F1-F12 key looks like a number pad
