I had the same problem and tried everything. My solution was a little unconventional but it worked!Use a double-sided 2" rubber mallet. (Below is a photo of a similiar mallet.) The rubber mallet distributes the weight evenly across the diameter of the watch back and it gives you more leverage when you push down on it. It worked great for me! Good luck!
I just had another watch with a difficult back to pop back on and I got my trusted mallet out, and then, after making sure every thing was aligned, I pressed with the palm of my hand on the other end of the mallet's head....and VOILA! it was an easy task. It popped back on easily.
I am so glad that I found the rubber mallet in my closet. I can't tell you how many times I've struggled with trying to get a back on a watch before. This works like a dream!
