Make sure the webcam mic is set as default
TEST SPEAKERS
Right click on speaker icon in System Tray or from Control Panel
Select "Playback Devices"
The speaker icon ( checked as working) and volume level graph should be visible
Right click on the volume graph and click "Test"
Left hand speakers followed by right hand should be heard

SET DEFAULT & TEST MIC
Click "Recording" tab.
To set required (webcam) mic as default - click on mic font to highlight and click "Properties"
In lower dropbox display "Use this device enable" click 'OK'
Click "Levels" tab and ramp up sliders ( adjust to suit later)
Return to "Recording". Test mic by speaking and make sure volume graph displays

Restart computer

You may be getting feedback from your speakers to your mic
Check by using a headset

Try testing it, last time I checked skype has a test section, its hard to find, but its there. You just talk into the mic and skype records it. Then play back.

It is possible the mic isn't working.

Before you consider taking it back, make sure you follow the instructions to the letter.

We recently bought two hp webcams, one for us and one for our son in Texas. There are no instructions with either webcam only the CD to install - no information at all on how to use the webcam or what...

You need to use a webcam service, and fortunately most all of them are free. To send recorded video messages to each other when you are not online at the same time try mailVU.com. It will allow 10 minute recording for free, and even has a self-destruct feature if you are concerned about privacy. To video chat live both you and your son will need to download the same client. I'd recommend Skype, but MSN, Yahoo, and Google all have free services as well. Once you and your son download their free software client you can video call each other when you are online at the same time.

I recently just bought a new laptop (compaq presario cq56) it has a webcam and all but its says please turn on the webcam, how do i turn on the camera?

This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows 7 . A webcam is built into the frame above the display screen on some HP notebooks. Since there is no power button or desktop icon for the webcam, the only way to test and use the webcam is to open a webcam application. Many of the applications used in Vista, such as CyberLink YouCam and QuickPlay, are incompatible with Windows 7. However, HP offers the MediaSmart suite for Windows 7 which includes a webcam application. HP MediaSmart Webcam can record videos, take snapshot photos, add text and animations to the image, track your movements with an avatar, and allow you to adjust the settings of the webcam. Many people use their webcam in a video chat. You can use HP MediaSmart Webcam with most third party video chat programs. To learn more, see HP Notebook PCs - How to Set Up the HP Webcam in Your Favorite Messenger for Windows 7 .

How can i change the resolution on my hp laptop's cam.

You can't change the webcam resolution, but you can change the recording resolution in some programs. I use Debut for recording webcam pictures and videos and it allows me to change resolutions. Video chat services don't let you change it as they limit the resolution to save on bandwidth.

How do I use the built in webcam for a video in a phone conversation

You'll need to use a software that has video conferencing capabilities. There are some that are specific to video meetings like oovoo or you can use IM software. I know that Yahoo Chat allows for video chatting, I've done this on my HP laptop with my sister. Facebook has a video link option, I've never used that one though so I don't know if it allows you to record using Facebook or if you have to upload a video already recorded.
