Most domestic machines would have difficulty using upholstery thread. Upholstery thread is generally very heavy so the tension settings would need to be adjusted on the machines. Evenso, the tension mechanisms adjustments still may not be enough to accommodate heavy upholstery thread.
Even if your machine can accommodate the thread, your machine's motor could be compromised trying to sew upholstery fabric.
I find that re-threading both top and bottom threads fixes the problem. Sometimes the thread has not gone through the tension springs properly. try a new needle too.
