Could be a timing issue with the tray mechanism - possible that somebody has given the tray "a shove" to make it close instead of using the open/close button and has put the timing out.or a worn tray loading belt
The micro switches on the tray are faulty. I had this problem and removed the switches cleaned them and reassembled. Trust me its better to buy the new switch(s) as I had to make use of watch making tools to fix this problem. No need for the whole dvd reader /writer just the draw motor and switch's. The reason you are experiancing this problem is the system does not know if the draw is open or closed.Note not a timing issue.
Entirely likely the switches too - I too have cleaned many of these, but in all the years I have been servicing consumer electronics, I have never had to replace the tray loading motor in anything.
