What operating system do you have? Look for a printer that has drivers that are fully compatible with your OS. In general, I've had good results with HP, Epson and Okidata. However, I do not have any all-in-ones and do not buy the cheapest ones that cost more in ink than to buy a new machine. (Stand-alone products are easier to troubleshoot and replace if needed.)
Also check that your system meets the minimum memory specs for the printer drivers without needing to close applications at the same time.
I hope this helps,

(Win7 drivers are in progress for some manufacturers and models, so check at the manufacturer's website for the compatibility or the Microsoft compatibility tool first:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx )
Mostlikly you had stale printing jobs to be done and the computer was trying to procces those and output them to the printer i recomend trying to hook up the same printer again check there website for updated drivers
note the printer icon in the lower right of your screen when you have printing jobs to be done try clearing the jobs or aborting the jobs to be done from the printer cache
untill you do this you will have slugish system no matter what printer you hook up to it
i know i havnt answered this question completly so plan on doing a lil more research on the topic of printer cache and how to clear it
The law of averages say stay with the HP line.. They trully have that market covered.

A
quick fix for most communication errors can be achieved by resetting the
printer and/or rebooting the PC. Simply disconnect the printer from your
computer. Reboot your pc. Unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source
to reset it. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to your computer. Then try
to print again once the computer fully recognizes the USB connection.
If
that doesn't help, try the steps below:
1.
Disconnect the printer from your computer.
2.
Rebrick (pull out power supply, black box where the
power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer, and put it back after 30
seconds).
2.
On your computer, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes.
3.
Delete the Lexmark print object.
4.
Reboot your pc.
5.
When your pc turns on, reconnect the printer.
6.
Wait until your pc fully recognizes the USB connection. To check, go to Control
Panel > Printers and Faxes. If you see a new Lexmark print object in the
list, then try to print again.
You
may also try to update your printer driver by visiting the Lexmark website at http://bit.ly/eO4Y77.
Select your operating system, download and execute the file.
