What do you want to see on it?

Press the Menu button to see the menu.
Press the Info button to see the shooting info screen.
Press the Playback button to review the pictures you've already taken.

If you want to use the LCD screen for shooting, then you're out of luck. The D40 does not have the Live View capability. The camera is designed to function as SLRs have for the last half century: you frame the picture through the viewfinder. I realize this isn't the answer you wanted to see, but that's the way the camera works.

How do i get the image that i see through the viewfinder, onto the lcd screen instead on my nikon d40

Sounds like you're looking for a feature called "live view". I don't believe the D40 has that feature.

D40 menu screen problem

i'll give you 2 solutions for this one

If you are talking about the MENU that shows up on the picture regarding the ISO, FLASH, APERTURE, WHITE BALANCE and Whatnot, you need to press the up arrow or down arrow buttons on the directional keys to remove the menu on the button

but if you are talking about the MENU which you can tweak different settings you just have to do a half-press on the shutter release button which will turn off the screen.

Video screen won't work

If you are talking about viewing the shot you just took, press the "info" button on the top of the camera (next to the shutter button), that will turn the LCD on and off.

Nikon D40

Try pressing the "info" button on the top of the camera next to the shutter button. This turns the LCD off and on to save battery life.

NO LCD display when shooting with brand new D40 ><

Most DSLRs (like the Nikon D50) don't have live view. In other words, in order to see the picture you must take it first.

About the auto review off, go to menu, "pencil" submenu, and the option is there (scroll until you see it)

With respect, you should read the manual. It's very comprehensive and needed. :)

I see nothing in the Viewfinder...

The camera has a mirror lock up feature for cleaning the CCD sensor. You may have engaged it. Check your manual about this function

Nikon D40 LCD screen.

Since the camera is an SLR, (single lens reflex), the CCD image sensor is behind the shutter until you take a picture. Sorry, but you cannot use the LCD to take pictures.
