Nikon D40 Image Darkness

Every other image I take is too dark - even though the auto flash fires each time (and the camera is in AUTO mode).  These are indoor, normal light pictures, and it happens both day and night.  I've tried waiting long gaps between shots (to let the flash fully charge), but it makes no difference.  The flash seems to go every time, but every alternate image remains dim.  Any ideas?

only have one lens.  I did try removing it and putting it back.  But I don't see how it's the lens -- the problem literally occurs every other picture; one will be perfectly fine and the next one oddly dark (even though the flash goes off with what appears to my eye to be the exact same intensity).  Was hoping it might be a setting that I inadvertently triggered...

I have the same problem, I've tried another lens and I get the same effect. I also get the 'error press shutter release button'.

How do you turn "bracketing" off? I don't see that word in the index to the instruction manual, and I did not see it in the menus either.

    Have you tried another lens?

You probably have "bracketing" turned on. In your menu settings, search for bracketing and make sure it is off.

Today, my Nikon d40 was showing an error message "press shutter button to release" and was taking very dark photos. Now, the error message is gone, but all photos are still very dark, even with...

Hi,1) Your camera has damage to the aperture control mechanism.
2) If you look in the viewfinder the image darkened, mayhave bent the aperture control lever.
In one must turn for service.
In two carefully can solve
You can also check whether the mechanism malfunctions diaphragm aperture setting to full and see that this does not close completely, pressing the shutter release button.
Best regards

Pictures too dark. Shutter operating too slowly.

Are you in auto mode? If it is manual then it is possible that the settings are not correct for the light. You can look at the meter to see what the camera thinks about the exposure.

It sounds as if your subject is too dark. Does this happen when the area is brightly lit? Does the flash fire?

Took extraordinary pictures with nikon d40 but can't edit them

You have your camera set to RAW format. It is not a compressed file, it is a full size file. Opening this in editing programs will either crash your computer or will refuse to open because of the size of the file. They are not damaged but your computer cannot handle the files. You should take them to a photo shop and have them put the files on a cd and consult your manual to change your camera to JPEG format.

My d40 has a image in viewfinder, will not take picture.

What lens are you using with the D40? Is it an AF-S lens? And is the Mirror Lockup on? Chech the Custom Settings menu. If mirror lockup is on, turn it off.

Certainly sounds like the mirror is stuck or even been dislodged.

How do I get my nikon d40 to take Black white pictures?

You CAN!!! shoot in b/w with a d40, the only thing is you can't shoot in auto mode it has to be manual , aperture priority, or shutter prioirity. Go into menu - shooting mode - optimize image. you'll find it in there.
