Just installed new Encore ENM232-8VIA sound card. Used Encore supplied CD to do install.. DM says it's working. Drivers installed. BUT got no sound.(Speakers are plugged and on.) Called Encore "Support". Said - no idea why but try reinstalling card to new PCI slot. Did that. Still no sound. Removed hardware and let Windows do it's thing at reboot, but still no sound. Ideas how to fix? I'm a novice.
Read Mobo manual and had to disable onboard card via jumper reset. Did that, still no sound. Ran Dxdiag. Get no driver installed for card. Get music in Dxdiag when test for music. (?)

Did that already. Rebooted. Still no sound. DM is not showing onboard devive. Just new card. DM says I have latest drivers. When go Mutimedia in Cntrl Pnl: says drivers enabled but inactive: unknown problem. This is driving me crazy. Only other device is "gameport" but can't get drivers for. Did that already. Still no sound. Here's what I've spent two days doing:
1) Installed ENM232-8VIA (sound card) in PCI slot. Let Install Wizard do its thing. No sound. Same message as above. 2) Downloaded driver exe from Encore for sound card. Deleted installed drivers and reinstalled from download. No dice. Same as above. 3) Called Encore Support 2x. No help. They couldn't tell me what to do. 4) Uninstalled. Tried different PCI slot. Same old same. 5) Slapped forehead and read Mobo manual. Set jumper to disable onboard. Reinstalled new card in PCI slot. Disabled on-board in BIOS. Lock and loaded - reinstalled drivers. You guessed it, NO SOUND. Still getting same messages DM sees device, says latest drivers, Multimedia sees device, says drivers enabled but not active, Dxdiag says see device, but no drives Yet on Music Tab I get sound. Sorry, one of my posts went astray. I'm on Win98 SE. It's an old bird but still flapping. DirectX is 9. Can't find Mp3 or digital setting in Control Panel (My Computer) or under Multi-media control. Jacked in speakers in "line out" But I've tried other jacks as well. No sound except for DxDiag "Sound" Tab test. I've downloaded ccleaner. Will sign off and give it a try. But before I do, suggestions as to what I should do after that? Just reboot and cross fingers? Will wait for reply.Sorry, one of my posts went astray. I'm on Win98 SE. That's the plan, def XP not Vista, but until then gotta have sound. Yes bought from Newegg (where else?)but I don't think it's the card. I think it's software. Either Win98 Se has become corrupted -- crashes, blue screens, etc or I screwed up something in install. I think that because DM says device working ok, driver is there/enabled, just not active. Keep thinking there must be away to make this work. That's the plan, def XP not Vista, but until then gotta have sound. Yes bought from Newegg (where else?)but I don't think it's the card. Midi Joystick -- what's that? When I disabled on-board and checked DM, noticed that gameport/joystick was gone? It was under audio. Thought it was game joystick BUT I see on this new card (you referred) says Midi Joystick in spec's. Could that be the porblem? Somehow that doesn't make me feel any better. Was hoping that was the fix. Well, Drummernick, gotta say thanks for all of your help. The card I bought said it's for Win88 SE too. Maybe I'll just save my pennies and go for the new computer sooner. I had this one custom built about 6 years ago for 900 and think I have gotten my money worth. (Upgrade ram (512) and video card (Geforce Fx 5500), monitor, replaced a fan, one CD drive -- not too bad.) Thanks again. If you don't mind I'll leave this topic open another night. Maybe something will come to one of us in the night. If not, I'll accept tomorrow. You ok with that?Somehow that doesn't make me feel any better. Was hoping that was the fix. Please set BIOS in fail save mode or change the boot order >1st boot will be dvd/cd and 2nd boot will be the HDD,or just simply save the BIOS save fail default. If the problem same change the cable new .
I think there are too many bad sectors in your 'HDD'. The reason you did not use for a long days or electricity problem (horrible breakable power supply). You will always use UPS. To repair the HDD, you should need a bootable DM .I don't know, which hdd you are using. So you will use ontrack bootable dm follow the step >
Restart >press F2/F10/Del( for entry in the BIOS)>Set the cd/dvd as 1st piority.
Ensure that your Bootable dm cd, in cd rom.
Boot from cd will be appear then hit Enter as quick as possible.
All it will be possible, if you know dos other wise it will be difficult.
DON'T PANIC,I hope, you will can do it
Type that letter where the dm software in the cd .
Type in dos mode . eg if your two partition c: d :so your dm will be in e:.
type e: and enter , for observation type= dir and enter >now you can see is there ontrack or dm (directy or folder) have or not try it once after one
if have ontrack in that folder type=cd (space) ontrack>cd (space) dm hit enter .
If you reinstalled Windows from a SP3 disk this can cause sonud card to fail. If this is you, reload from the supplied disks and make sure everything works before you do updates.
When you install the sound card drivers, they disable ALL motherboard sound functions, and enable them on the sound card, meaning you can do the same things, with better quality, you just need to connect everything to the soundcard or it won't work. SO then you cannot connect any sound to the front of the computer anymore, but a soundcard should have plenty of connections on the back side of the PC.
From what I understood from your story, you switched cassette players AND installed a sound card. If I were you I'd first install the sound card drivers, then try to play audio with the old cassette player, and see wether that works. If it does, your new cassette player has another (if at all) output than the old one. Then you'll just have to use the old one. If it does not work, your soundcard is the problem, which seems a bit odd. Soundcards are usually meant to do more than on-board sound, not less. I'd contact your manufacturer and ask wether it's normal this doesn't work, or that the card's broken.
you would have to find the encore manufacturers website and download the driver from there ( if they have gone belly up then you will have to go to www.driverguide.com and find it on there and install it.
If not then it would be a lot easier to get a new wireless card by linksys or netgear or draytek if they do one ( preferably PCI if this is a desktop or PCMCIA if its a laptop )
USB dongles arent that great for wireless - they work but not as good as a PCI or PCMCIA one will.
you need to have a LAN card, but normally, all computers have built-in lan card provided its a new computer. make sure you also have a broadband connection
The following products are not compatible with Windows Vista: FD-A1/FD-A2 (Floppy Disc Adapter) DM-R1 (Image Memory Card Reader) DPC-R1 (Image Memory Card Reader)
The following products are compatible with Windows Vista: SM-R1/SM-R2 (Image Memory Card Reader) PC-AD3 (PC Card Adapter) DPC-AD (PC Card Adapter) DPC-CF (CF Card Adapter) DPC-UD (USB Pen Drive)
You need to update the driver from device manager and make sure that you browse for the driver from your installation CD because there are times that windows install its own driver for a device liek a wireless adapter.
hope that helps........
Make sure you are installing the right drivers to your operating system. If this is an older sound card, goto the manufactures web page and download the updated drivers there.
