How to Start

To enable file sharing, do the following:

  1. In the Sharing and Discovery section of the Network and Sharing Center window, click the down arrow next to File sharing.
  2. Within the File sharing settings, click Turn on file sharing, and then click Apply.
To enable public folder sharing, do the following:
  1. In the Sharing and Discovery section of the Network and Sharing Center window, click the down arrow next to Public folder sharing.
  2. Within the Public folder sharing settings, click one of the following:
    • If you want to share the public folder so that other computers on the network can access the Public share to open files, but not create or change files, click Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open files. This is the default setting.
    • If you want to share the public folder so that other computers on the network can access the Public share to open files and also create or change files, click Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open, change, and create files.
    • Click Apply.

Windows Firewall
  • Open Windows Live OneCare
  • Change OneCare Setting
  • Firewall connection tool
  • Tick relevant options (Network discovery, file and print settings, etc)
  • Click OK
  • Go to Advanced Settings
  • Change file sharing from 'Do not share files and printers"
  • Click Ok twice...
To share a drive
  • Go to the file explorer (Windows Key + E).
  • Right click on the hard drive (or partition) and then choose to share ...
  • In the new window click the Security tab.
  • Click on the Edit button.
  • Click the Add button.
  • Type "guest" (without quotes) where the cursor blinks.
  • Validate by clicking on the OK button.
  • If you need to write on this disk from the network, check the "amendment" in the permits.
  • Then confirm by clicking the OK button.
  • Please wait while Windows change the permissions.
  • Click on the Sharing tab.
  • Click on the Advanced Sharing button.
  • In the new window, check Share this folder.
  • Click on the Permissions button.
  • Type "guest" (without quotes) where the cursor blinks.Or you can use Everyone.
  • Validate by clicking on OK.
  • If you need to write on this disk from the network, check the change in permits.
  • Then confirm by clicking the OK button.
  • Please wait while Windows change all permissions (several minutes if you share a lot of files).

Now what are these settings??? They are Sharing permissions...
But what about NTFS permissions??? That is where the problem occurs

So you have to adjust them also...
Make sure you have ntfs format in the hard drive.

Note: You can use password protected sharing in Vista for a higher level of security
Note: Sharing via the Public folder is quick and easy but inflexible.
Note: If you select Everyone, and you have password-protected sharing enabled, the user must still have a valid account on your computer. However, if you have turned off password-protected sharing, network users can gain access only if you grant permission to Everyone or to Guest.
So we will do this in an advanced way...

Here is how

To make sure the Sharing Wizard is enabled, click the Start button, type “folder” in the Search box, and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab. In the Advanced settings box, scroll down the list and un-tick the Use Sharing Wizard (Recommended) check box is selected.

  1. On the Sharing tab, click Advanced Sharing.
  2. Select the Share this Folder check box.

Use advanced settings to create or modify a network share
  3. Accept or change the proposed share name. Or give a new one if you have used that or if you are no satisfied with that
  4. Type a description of the folder’s contents in the Comments box.
  5. To limit the number of users who can connect to the shared folder concurrently, specify a number in the Limit the number of simultaneous users to box.
  6. You can set caching also.
  7. Click Permissions.
  8. Change settings appropriately. (Everyone is the network users so you can use that. Or you can map a specific user)
  9. You can also give full access and then set the ntfs permission to restrict Object based actions.
  10. Remember without the Wizard you cannot share files and multiple objects simultaneously.
  11. Click Ok.
  12. The go to folder properties and security tab.
  13. Set the permission. You can use authenticated users as the users (Recommended). Otherwise if you ignore setting ntfs permissions you will not be allowed to do anything to objects.
  14. Click Ok.
This will set all the necessary things. Then you are set to go.
If this solution is helpful to you please rate the answer.
Thank You for contacting Fixya. :)

How do i create my windows xp pro as a domain server to control the internet access? please help me to create my win xp pro to be a domain server... tnx....

Unfortunately WinXP Pro cannot cannot become a domain server, but you can install a free program called K9 Web Protection on each of the PC's you have on your network and will be able to allow users to browse safely on the internet. Here is a link to their site:

http://www1.k9webprotection.com/

It can filter web content and even setup a schedule of when users are granted web access and when it is denied.

I am trying to access an HP 1200 psc over a home network

Have you set up the printer to be shared via the network? You can usually set this up in printer options, through control panel. If the wifi is a closed network, so much the better. That way, nobody else can use the printer. You should be able to do this easily, as long as both computers are connected to the wireless network.

Print from vista to xp with usb connected lexmark 2350 results in access denied error after timeout. Vista access shared printer through a wireless router. Any recommendations?

Okay, I need to understand your topology a little better. You have two PCs, one using Vista and one using XP. Both PCs are connected to the Wireless modem. The printer is connected to the XP PC and shared across the local network? When the Vista unit sends a job to the printer, you get an access error message. Is this description accurate? Normally this would be caused by the sharing settings on the XP unit. Please make sure you have the sharing options correctly set on the XP unit and then get back to me if I've given you an incorrect path to follow. Don

Unable to share printer

You need to go into the machine that manages the printer and allow the access denied machine access or to share printer. You may have to run the network setup wizard in order for the machines to recognize each other.

...install a modem...

You have only 3 choices:

1) Buy a USB wireless access point with drivers for XP
Pro: Cheapest way to go
Con: You have to deal with it protruding from the side of
Your laptop.

2) Replace the internal mini PC card with an older unit that has drivers available for XP.
Pro: Your laptop will look normal and you will not waste one of your USB ports.
Con: The high cost an the high probability that your motherboard has been configured to deny access to its resources to internal components that run on an XP environment. Microsoft has been using strong arm tactics on hardware manufacturers denying them licensing if they provide drivers for an operating system they are trying to kill.

3) The best alternative is to partition your hard drive into 2 logical disks. Install Vista on one and XP on the other. This is called a dual boot environment and it is what I run personally. When you turn on your computer a boot menu comes up and asks you which operating system you want to load. This way you will have access to the full power of Vista and your laptop and all its hardware and you will still be able to run your legacy software that is dependent on XP. You can buy the external USB wifi too if you want internet access in the XP environment also. I hope you find this info valuable and if you need more info feel free to contact me: [email protected] I will help you for free. Send me your number and when you would be available to discuss your options further. I have all the software for partitioning the drive and setting up the dual boot environment. I'll send it to you for free. Hope to hear from you soon. Please take the time to rate this solution Fixya in return for my premium free support. I do this for a hobby so it will not cost you anything. The other techs are jealous and are constantly messing up my ratings because they are here for the money and I help everyone for free.
When you rate me it locks it in and they can no longer negatively vote on my solutions. They bicker with each other like school girls. Hope to hear from you soon,
