My Frigidaire upright freezer is only 4 years old. I have occasionally noticed a little water coming from under the freezer, but thought a pan had become dislodged or something similar. This morning I found lots of water on the floor coming from under the freezer and all the food inside was thawed. The light is on so I know there is electricity to the appliance. The freezer will "run" for a few minutes then shut off. I unloaded the freezer into a friend's freezer, pulled mine out and unplugged it. It had losts of frost and ice in it; it's supposed to be frost-free. I have absolutely no clue what is wrong with it.
Freezers have safety devices to protect themselves. The compressor has an internal overload to keep it from overheating. some have external reset buttons and some do not. either way the cause must be corrected. if the freezer was low on refrigerant you would see signs of oil near the coils, tubing, or compressor. If there is no leak, it overheats when there is airflow restrictions(dirty coils) or a fan has stopped working. only a few screws keep you from seeing all there is to see. If it is clean and the fan is running, then the compressor may just be the culprit
Testimonial: "Thanks so much for your advice. Freezer seems to be working after being thoroughly thawed. Fingers are crossed."
