P4M800-M7 presumed memory problem

Hello,

I have a P4M800-M7 Revision 3.1 MB
when I add 2GB memory (two 1GB DDR 400 DIMMs)
P4 3.1 GHz, running RHEL Linux 4.1.1-52 it acts like it was single stepping down in CPU cycle speed. It works fine with 1.5GB. Something about the 2GB memory that makes it slow step.
All memory modules check out on alternate
machines. When booting into a XP runtime environment it runs with no slowness noted but XP was not really loaded down.

One immediate question is there any known MB problems accessing
2GBs of primary memory.

I have a P4M800-M mobo running with 512mb DDR. I recently bought a DDR2 (2x 1GB) from Dominator and installed it in the MoBo. The system only says 512mb on system information and 512mb (533mhz) on start-up. Do I need to do anything to get the Mobo recognize the 2GB RAM and max out the system performance? You assistance wil be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What memory do I need?

Your machine has 4 DIMM slots. They use PC3200 (DDR400) DIMMS (184-pin). The machine comes pre-installed with 2, 256MB DIMMS providing 512MB of RAM. The largest DIMMs available in the DDR PC3200 are 1GB. If you keep what you have, you can add an additional 2GB of RAM, for a total of 2.5GB. If you are running WINXP 32-bit, this should be more than acceptable. You can replace all four DIMMS and get 4GB of RAM, but a 32-bit OS can only access a little of 3GB of RAM. If you want to come close to maxing out under a 32-bit OS, remove one of the installed DIMMS and add 3 1GB DIMMS. These are old memory and may be hard to find and actually cost more than newer memory.

Info from the manual:

Memory configurations

You can install 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, and 1GB DDR SDRAM DIMMs into the DIMM sockets using the memory configurations in this section.

• Install only identical (the same type and size) DDR DIMM pairs

using the recommended configurations.

• Make sure that the memory frequency matches the CPU FSB

(Front Side Bus). Refer to the Memory frequency/CPU FSB

synchronization table on the next page.

• This motherboard does not support double-sided 16-bit DDR DIMMs.

• Do not create a three-DIMM configuration in dual-channel mode. The
third DIMM is ignored in the dual-channel operation.

Why won't MB recognise new 2 x 1Gb Memory?

The motherboard does not support 1 GB modules; 512 MB is the maximum the motherboard will recognize. Usually, the computer won't even work if the memory isn't supported but in this case it does.

Thanks and please remember to give this a thumbs up rating.
