SOURCE: Camera won't autofocus
I too had D50 autofocus problems and ended up buying a new D300. I then learned that my issue was in the focus areas. The D50 has five focus areas. As you look through the lens, you will see one rectangle in the center and four to the top, bottom, left and right. You should make sure that the center rectangle is highlighted. Use the round thumbdial on the back of the camera to move the focus area.

has the lens stuck up? put it temporarily on 'M" and try to turn the focus ring. this should be freely turning;
otherwise you may want to check the camera body to lens electrical contacts (silver).. a small dab of alcohol to a q-tip.. make sure its not that wet..then try to clean the contacts.

Auto focus works by detecting differences in contrast. If you try to focus on something with no contrast, the camera will have trouble focussing. Try aiming the camera at something else the same distance away and keep the button pressed half-way while you re-compose the shot.

I had a similar problem with one that I bought. and come to find out, the gears internally in the lens where broken. I would return the lens, and get another one. Also when you go to buy a lens for your camera make sure that you bring the camera with you to test the zoom before you buy it.
Just FYI you also need to remember that with a smaller zoom your focus time will be slower, and it will take getting use to, unlike the larger zooms, you are trying to focus on a large area but being very detailed at the same time.

Trying to repair a scratch on the front of a lens is impossible without changing the focus of the lens. You will never be happy with the results.
