Sony XBR4 - 46 inch Double Imaging and 1/2 screen dark

Wow - this is exact same problem we are experiencing. Ours is 1 year 9 months. And it just started - except it take about 15-20 minutes for the double imaging to disappear - and only on the right side of the TV.
And then after the TV is perfectly clear.

It is definitely TV issue because we unhooked every cable and just turned the TV on by itself and the problem is there.

We are just out of warranty, and spent a lot of $$$ on this TV !

We have a SONY XBR4 and we are experiencing the same issues. When you turn on the TV, the right side is dark, then there is shadowing with movements. After about 15 minutes the picture is fine. Sometime shortly after you will get a dark area in the middle of the screen (this doesn't happen all the time). I called SONY, they were not helpful at all. They told me because the TV was not under warranty - it is only a year and a half old, they couldn't do anything for me. We had one of their service people come out to look at it. They basically told us its the panel and it has to be replaced. The cost is $2000. NEVER BUY SONY AGAIN!!! You might as well go and buy a new TV.

Sorry not a solution...We also have exact same problem (TV about 1.5 years old) - out of warranty - all Sony told me to try was to un-plug TV for 2 minutes - useless. I am trying to decide if I should bring to service store to try to fix. I hate to spend a couple of hundred dollars to find out it costs $2000 - less then a new one. Anyone have any suggestions?

Have a Sony XBR46in and am experiencing the same issue. The company that sold me the warranty is now out of business though, go figure...

  • Anonymous Jun 18, 2010

Sony fixed mine for free, they have a recall on some XBR models made in 07 and 08. Apparently there was a bad lot of LCDs made in Malaysia at this time.

    Dear Valued Sony® BRAVIA® Customer,

Sony has identified a limited number of 46" BRAVIA LCD televisions (models listed below) which may develop picture anomalies on the screen related to the LCD Panel.

    Affected Models:

        KDL-46XBR4

        KDL-46XBR5

As part of our commitment to quality, under the terms of the limited warranty included with the product, Sony will replace the LCD Panel in any Affected Model experiencing picture anomalies due to LCD Panel failure through October 31, 2012. Please note that except as set forth in this announcement, the terms of the Sony limited warranty for these products continue to apply.

In addition, customers who paid out-of-pocket to repair the LCD Panel on one of the Affected Models prior to the date of this announcement may be eligible to be reimbursed by mail for parts and labor expenses. To receive reimbursement, please follow completely the directions on the claim form for reimbursement; all claims must be postmarked by June 30, 2010. See claim form for complete terms and conditions.

Sony uses a network of hundreds of qualified independent third-party servicers to perform in-home television warranty service. Sony, through its authorized servicer network, will endeavor to repair your set within 30 days of your first contact. For diagnosis, warranty service or if you are not provided a repair within 30 days, please contact Sony at (888) 649-7669.

    Sincerely,
    Sony Electronics

I have this issue with my LCD Panel on my KDL46XBR4 and called Sony who told me I am out of luck. I cannot get the extended warranty since it is not longer available. They offered me 15% off of a new TV. Are they kidding. I spent $3k on this set and now it doesn't work. This is a well known issue and Sony doesn't stand behind their products. This is the last Sony product I will ever buy.

We have a SONY KDL46XBR4 less than two years old. We are experiencing the same problems. The estimated cost to replace the LCD panel is more than $2000. I never expected so many others experiencing similar problems.

Same problem (ghosting on right side) just appeared last week on my set (just over 4 years old). It was interesting to see that SONY recognizes that there is a panel problem with these models yet put a replacement date of no later than 10/31/12 - after that date all 46XBR4 owners are on their own. I registered my unit with SONY when I purchased it. You would think that SONY would have sent an e-mail of the potential problem - not so. After speaking with 3 different customer service people of this problem, their offer is to me is to purchase a reconditioned 46XBR4 for $579 + tax with a 90 day warranty. This sounds like a great deal - why would I want a troubled unit with a horrible service history and a new unit is $120 more? SONY dropped their responsibility on this one. At one time SONY stood for "top of the line quality". I have no desire to ever purchase a SONY product again with this type of product service resolution.

Not a solution but I have experienced the same problem with my 46" Bravia W Series. Fortunately it started 2 weeks before the 12 month warranty ran out. I think Sony made a slip there! A serviceman from a Sony repairer said it needed a new panel and it came from a known bad batch out of Malaysia (in 2008 I think). They say they have ordered a new panel from Sony and will replace it on site for free but it's been a few weeks now and I haven't heard from them yet despite several phone calls.
It still works after a few minutes but the warming up time is increasing and the serviceman reckons it will only survive for about 8 weeks. Most annoying because the Sony picture when it is working is brilliant.

Sony replaced my 46" Bravia W Series with a newer model at no cost.
It took about two months but I'm very happy with the result.

Hi, I have a 46" Sony and its on a sliding mount so I can pull/push it into the entertainment center. Interestingly, I can wait for it to clear, and that is progressively getting worse. OR, alot of times I can "jilt" the set by hitting it with and it clears. To me, this seems more of a connector problem, where heat(thermal expansions, electrical resistances), change over the warmup. Now, where do I get a good manual on taking this thing apart.......

The screen has colored vertical lines and becomes to a dark black band about 6 inches of width. The tv is exactly two years old by today.

My 3-year old 52-inch Toshiba flat panel TV (Model # 52RV53U, Serial # AM409000295) developed a display problem (purchased Aug. 2008, manufactured July 2008). Vertical multicolored lines appeared on the screen just left of center. The band of thin vertical bars is 5.5 inches wide. The lines are about 1/16-inch wide. They are stationary, always exactly in same place. They over-ride any other picture on the screen (no transparency). They are there all time even with no video inputs to the TV after the unit is turned on. See picture #1. The TV works well in every other respect, but, obviously, it is annoying to watch the picture with the color band blocking about 1/6 of the picture.

Further info, pics, comments, and updates on my Facebook page at

http://on.fb.me/mVwhVN

I already swapped out the TCON board with no improvement and replugged the TCON board cables with no improvement.

Most likely it is the flat panel tab bond failure (panel made by Samsung). Further solution updates will be on my Facebook page.

Blue patch on right side of screen. strange dark pattern also.also has lots of yellow on the otherside of screen tv is about 5 years old.

If it looks like a cloud of colour, the optical block needs replacing. It is the heart of the LCD. We had ours replaced twice, under warranty.

My 52inch xbr4 tv is 2 years old. Intermitently over past 2 months, when I first turned it on, I get thin vertical lines and double imaging especially over left half of screen. After a few minutes it would...

I have the same issue. Bought the TV 1/08 and it started showing those exact symptoms about 3-4 months ago. It generally progresses and gets worse. You can try to fix it as it's some kind of TAB connector issue, or keep calling Sony so that the 52" owners of the XBR4 and 5 series get the extended warranty just like the 46" owners received for the same series. If enough of us keep calling, they'll have to act.

Fault code J50 & dark strip.

This is for a Mita 1560 Photocopier (analog)
J50 was caused by exit sensor not sitting correctly in its bracket,I fixed this by pushing it until it
clicked back in.
The dark lines & double imaging can be caused light getting onto the drum ,or if the drum gets
cold (so I have been advised) which one it was for sure I will never know because when I
returned the next day & fixed the exit sensor the copy was OK.
