There are two lines leading into the unit, the high side aND THE LOW SIDE. tO ADD FREON you need to add a valve to the low side line. But if you have a leak that indicates that moisture is in the unit and you need to pull a valum to remove the moisture before ADDING ANY FREON. There are as last known three types of freon, R22, R134a and this last one I dont even know the name.

We just got this air conditioner and it did not have a manual, do we need to add any water to this unit?

You do not need to add water to the air conditioner. Water will form and drain outside when it cools the space down, as it also pulls moisture from the air.

Unit overheating and blowing fuses

Low gas pressur causing the unit to overwork/heat, water trap coolant service port blocked. Some machines need 1/2 liter of water pouerd into a reservoir on the rear to aid cooling the heat exchanger, if this is dry it will overheat. cheakc the filters if it has any.

Lost manual

No, you don't put water into air conditioners. They make their own water and it is an inconvenient by-product that needs to be disposed of in some way. The A/C will use the outside fan blade to fling the water on the hot coil, let it drain out, or both.
